MY GRANDDAUGHTER Kariss decided one afternoon to sit in my den and eat potato chips. I told her no eating potato chips in the den. She quickly went to the kitchen.

A few minutes later, I walked through the den for something and saw her eating cookies in the den. I said, “I thought I said don’t eat in the den?”

She said, “No, Poppy. That’s not what you said. You said, ‘Don’t eat potato chips in the den.’ ” She held up the cookie. “This … is not a potato chip.”

The lists in legalism are always too short or too long. The lists in legalism also don’t deal with the attitude behind the action. A person could do everything on a list and still have a wrong spirit.559
