The work status of parents with children has dramatically changed. According to the U.S. Census Bureau:
• Fifty-one percent of families had both spouses employed in 1998. That was up from 33 percent in 1976.
• Fifty-nine percent of married or single mothers with babies younger than a year old were employed at least part-time. That was up from 31 percent in 1976.
• Seventy-three percent of mothers ages fifteen to forty-four with children older than a year in 1998 were employed. Of them, 52 percent were working full-time. There was no data available for 1976.
