(March 2, 1810–July 20, 1903), whose given name was Gioacchino Pecci, stated in his encyclical on the condition of labor, Rerum Novarum, May 15, 1891:

Every man has by nature the right to possess property as his own.2423

Sears, Edmund Hamilton (April 6, 1810–January 16, 1876), was an American clergyman. He ministered in Wayland, Massachusetts, 1848–66; and in Weston, Massachusetts, 1866–76. In 1850, Edmund Hamilton Sears wrote The Angel’s Song:

It came upon the midnight clear,

That glorious song of old,

From Angels bending near the earth

To touch their harps of gold:

“Peace on earth, good will to men

From heav’n’s all gracious King."

The world in solemn stillness lay

To hear the angels sing.2424
