My three young children love to get up early and watch the garbage truck. They love watching the waste hauler empty the can and work the lever that causes the truck to compact the trash.

On the morning I turned thirty-five, my husband said to the children with a smile, “Kids, do you know what makes today so special?”

Our five-year-old rushed past my outstretched arms to the window and yelled, “It’s garbage day!”
