DAKOTA, STATE OF
(November 2, 1889), was the 40th State admitted to the Union. The Constitution of the State of South Dakota, adopted 1889, stated:
Preamble. We, the people of South Dakota, grateful to Almighty God for our civil and religious liberties … establish this Constitution.3415
Article VI, Section 3. The right to worship God according to the dictates of conscience shall never be infringed.3416
