Luke 22:19-20 – Remembering – Bible study
Luke 22:19-20 Remembering Tonight is the Lords Supper and in reading the Scripture, I noticed two things that lead to the thoughts I will share tonight. I will share the first one with you now and the other in a few minutes. I noticed Jesus command, "This do in remembrance of me." There are several reasons why we have this particular service, but one of themand one of the most important, is to remember. It is important that we do not forget some things. 2Peter 1:8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Tonight, I invite you to spend a few moments remembering with me. I. I remember who I was. A. I do not know who you were but I remember who I was. B. I was lost. 1. That means that I was separated from God. a. The sad truth is that I did not know that I was separated from God. b. To be honest, I did not know what God thought of me, and I really did not care enough to find out. c. Thank God for Christian parents who teach their children who God is and what God thinks. 2. Even more, it means that I was Gods enemy. Ro 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. a. Why was I ab enemy to God? b. The short answer is because I was tearing down what God was building up. c. You might need the long answer for that to make much sense. 1. God created every one of us for the same purpose, to glorify Him. 2. As a separated sinner, I was not only NOT bringing Him glory, I was stealing the glory for myself. 3. That made me Gods enemy. I couldnt hurt Him, but I was working against Him. 3. I was damned. a. When I have a tool that doesnt work, I throw it away. 1. If my watch doesnt keep the correct time, I pitch it. 2. If I had to reset my watch every six months, Id throw it away. b. You understand that hell is Gods heap? It is where God throws the tools He created that do not work. c. Someone might ask, "Why doesnt God just snap them out of existence?" 1. The answer – Because He created you to live eternally. 2. Every once in a while, we need to remind ourselves of where we were headed BEFORE we got saved! II. I remember Jesus. A. I remember Jesus gave the gift of His body. 1. There was a second thing I noticed from this Scripture. 2. I noticed that Jesus said of the bread, "This is My body;" then He gave the bread to the disciples. 3. That was Jesus giving the disciples a gift. The gift was His body. 4. We need to remember that Jesus is God and He did not have a body. 5. Jesus body had to be specially created for Him. Heb 10:5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: 6. This body was made for one primary purpose- to make it possible that God could die for mankind. 7. Sometimes we complain that Jesus asks us to give our bodies as a living sacrifice. We forget that He gave His body as a living sacrifice for us! B. I remember that Jesus gave us the gift of His blood. 1. Not only did Jesus give us His body, He also gave His blood. 2. Matthew and Mark both record Jesus making the same gesture with the fruit of the vine and His blood. Mt 26:28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. Mr 14:24 And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many. 3. Then Jesus gave the blood to them. 4. It was a gift! 5. It was not just the body of Jesus that was necessary to redeem mankind. a. It was the blood of Jesus. b. The blood had to be extracted from the body and then applied to the altar. 6. Interestingly, God had always intended this to be the case. a. \#Ge 3:21\ Where God made coats of skins. b. All the way to the plain teaching of the bloods purpose and power. Lev 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. Heb 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. C. I remember that Jesus gave us the gift of His pain. 1. The only requirement was that the blood be removed from the body and applied to the altar. 2. No pain was required. a. Years ago, I read an article that said with a sharp knife an experienced butcher could slit the throat of an animal so quickly that the animal would feel no pain and die in a few seconds. b. Jesus could have died that way. He could have sat in a Lazy Boy recliner, had a tube inserted in His vein while He relaxed. c. But He did not. 3. In fact, Jesus followed the image of the "Lamb of God" being sacrificed in almost every way except one major one. a. He did not die quickly or mercifully. b. The sacrificial lambs did, but Jesus did not. 4. Jesus experienced, in part, three of the most brutal ways of death. a. He was beatennot to death, but He was beaten. b. He was scourged, another painful means which could kill. c. And He was crucified. 5. Is it not interesting that Jesus picked the time of the cross to come die for our sins? a. As there ever been a more painful method of death? b. Jesus could have come 100 years earlier or 100 years later and not faced the cross but He did not. 6. Why did Jesus give us the gift of pain? a. Because His pain paid for our peace and our healing. Isa 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. b. Every twinge of pain He felt is a pain we do not have to feel. c. Every ounce of agony He endured is an ounce of agony we do not have to feel. d. Every strip He took is a sickness we do not have to bear. III. I remember what I now have. A. I have redemption. B. I have a new relationship with God. C. I have a new life. D. I have victory over the devil. I remember!
