Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of 2 Kings 25:13
And the pillars of brass that [were] in the house of the LORD, and the bases, and the brazen sea that [was] in the house of the LORD, did the Chaldees break in pieces, and carried the brass of them to Babylon.
13. and the pillars of brass ] These were the pillars, Jachin and Boaz, the two masterpieces of Hiram mentioned in 1Ki 7:15. Their position was not within the house, but in the porch (see 1Ki 7:21 and all the notes there).
and the bases ] See 1Ki 7:27. These were richly wrought stands to support the lavers used in the sacrificial services.
and the brasen sea that was [R.V. were ] in the house of the Lord ] On the brasen sea, see 1Ki 7:23. Both the bases and the sea were within the inner court.

The pillars of brass … – All the more precious treasures had been already removed from the temple 2Ki 24:13. But there still remained many things, the list of which is given in Jer 52:17-23 much more fully than in this place. Objects in brass, or rather bronze, were frequently carried off by the Assyrians from the conquered nations. Bronze was highly valued, being the chief material both for arms and implements. The breaking up of the pillars, bases, etc., shows that it was for the material, and not for the workmanship, that they were valued. On the various articles consult the marginal references.

Ver. 13-17. And the pillars of brass that were in the house of the Lord,…. The two pillars in the temple, Jachin and Boaz. Benjamin of Tudela says w, that in the church of St. Stephen in Rome these pillars now are with the name of Solomon engraved on each; and the Jews at Rome told him, when there, (in the twelfth century,) that on the ninth of Ab (the day the temple was destroyed) every year sweat was found upon them like water; the one, I suppose, will equally be believed as the other, since it is here expressly said that the Chaldeans broke them in pieces. From hence, to the end of 2Ki 25:17 is the same with
Jer 52:7, where it is rather more largely and fully expressed; only there is this difference here in 2Ki 25:17 the height of the chapiter of a pillar is said to be three cubits, there five cubits; for the reconciliation of which, [See comments on Jer 52:22].

(13) And the pillars of brass. From this point Jeremiah 39 ceases to be parallel with the present narrative. (See the Notes on 1Ki. 7:15 seq., for the objects enumerated in this and the following verses.) Instead of brass we should probably understand copper throughout.

Ver. 13. And the pillars of brass. ] The ornaments of the temple and instruments of God’s service were all carried away, as had been foretold. Jer 27:21-22 But it befell Jeremiah, as the poets feign of Cassandra, that he spake truth, but could not be believed.

the Temple Despoiled
2Ki 25:13-21
The Temple, after 420 years of varying fortune, was burned to the ground, and the remainder of its treasures carried off. A few years after, Nebuchadnezzar set up an image of gold on the plains of Dura, Dan 3:1. It has been suggested that this image was probably made from the metal removed from the Holy City; and this may have been an additional reason for the refusal of the Jews to worship as the king demanded.
We have no information respecting the disposition of the Ark. It may have been hidden by Jeremiah or by some other pious priest, who took the precaution of conveying it and the sacred documents it contained to a place of safety. How wonderful it would be if, in the restoration of the Jews to their ancient city-an event that may be near at hand-remains of the Ark of the Covenant should yet be discovered in connection with the vast subterranean vaults beneath the Temple site!
These tragic events are a powerful commentary upon the ancient text that sin is a reproach to any people, Pro 14:34. Let modern cities and civilizations beware; for if God spared not the natural branches, neither will He spare those which have been grafted in among them. See Rom 11:18-25.

2Ki 25:13. The pillars of brass, &c., did the Chaldees break in pieces Because they were too cumbersome to be carried away whole. And carried the brass of them to Babylon As was foretold Jer 27:21-22.
