(34) Abraham begat Isaac.From Gen. 25:19.
Esau and Israel.Esau is named first, not as the elder, but because the tribes of Esau are to be first enumerated. (Comp. Note above on 1Ch. 1:28-42.)
Israel. The more honourable appellation (Gen. 32:28) almost wholly supplanted Jacob as the name of the chosen people, except in poetry and prophecy. Some moderns have seen in such double names as Jacob-Israel, Esau-Edom, a trace of an ancient fusion or amalgamation of distinct races.

Here again, after mentioning the sons of Isaac, Esau, and Israel, the sacred Historian takes up in a short view Esau’s posterity before that he enters upon that of Israel, and therefore reserves the history of the seed of Israel, for the subject of the next chapter. It is well worthy the earnest attention of the Reader, that as the promise was to be established in Isaac and his seed, and the son of the bond-woman was not to be heir with the son of the free-woman, hence the posterity of Ishmael and of Esau, are just set down to show the faithfulness of God’s promise to Abraham, and his love to Isaac, in the accomplishment of temporal blessings to them; but the grand subject of the whole genealogy carried on in a regular progression from Adam to Israel, through all the intermediate generations, which followed in the common order of nature. Gen_17:20; Gen_25:5-6 ; Gal 4:28-31 .

“And Abraham begat Isaac. The sons of Isaac: Esau, and Israel.”
E.M. Zerr:
1Ch 1:34. In a verse above, two of Abraham’s sons are named. Now the author is concerned about the one who is in the direct blood line, but who also had his family tree divided into two branches, Esau and Israel or Jacob.
