Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of 1 Chronicles 9:28

And [certain] of them had the charge of the ministering vessels, that they should bring them in and out by tale.

28, 29. Duties of the Levites

28. And certain of them ] The reference is to the Levites. The contents of 1Ch 9:28-29 clearly refer to Levitical duties (cp. 1Ch 23:29), and the transition from porters to Levites is made easier by the fact that the four porters last mentioned (1Ch 9:26-27) are Levites.

the ministering vessels ] R.V. the vessels of service.

that they should bring them in and out by tale ] R.V. for by tale were they brought in and by tale were they taken out.

By tale – literally, by number. The vessels for service taken out of the treasury were counted, that the same number should be returned to the treasury after the service was over,

And certain of them had the charge of the ministering vessels, that they should bring them in and out by tale. Which the priests used in sacrificing, and which the Levites brought to them, and returned again to their proper places.

(28) The care of the sacred vessels of gold and silver. These were counted when brought out of the store rooms, and when replaced, to make sure that none was purloined. (Comp. Ezr. 8:20 et seq.)

Tale.Reckoning, number.:

And every shepherd tells his tale

Under the hawthorn in the dale.

Literally, for by number they used to bring them in (to the sanctuary), and by number they used to take them out.

28. The ministering vessels As these seem to be distinguished from the ordinary vessels of the sanctuary mentioned in the next verse, they are understood by Bertheau and Keil to be the peculiarly costly vessels; for example, “the golden cups for the libations, etc., which were brought from the treasure chamber only for a short time for use in the service.”

By tale Or, by number. They were carefully numbered, both when brought in and taken out, lest any one of them should become lost or missing.

1ch 9:28-32

1Ch 9:28-32

“And certain of them had charge of the vessels of service; or by count were these brought in and by count were these taken out. Some of them also were appointed over the furniture, and over all the vessels of the sanctuary, and over the fine flour, and the wine, and the oil, and the frankincense, and the spices. And some of the sons of the priests prepared the confection of the spices. And Mattithiah, one of the Levites, who was the first-born of Shallum the Korahite, had the office of trust over the things that were baked in pans. And some of their brethren, of the sons of the Kohathites, were over the showbread, to prepare it every sabbath.”

E.M. Zerr:

1Ch 9:28. Vessels means any implement or utensil. These men had a general charge to care for the utensils needed about the temple. By tale denotes a counting of the utensils when they were taken out of their storing place for service, then counted again when ready to be put back. This was in the nature of a “check.”

1Ch 9:29. Every man had his own task. Some had that of supervising the utensils, also the materials used in the service.

1Ch 9:30. In Exo 30:23-25 the formula was given for the anointing oil. There were restrictions about the making and using of this ointment, therefore it was appropriate that the sons of the priests have charge of its mixing as indicated here.

1Ch 9:31. According to Lev 2:5 some of the materials used in the service were prepared in pans. Mattithiah had charge of this part of the work.

1Ch 9:32. Kohathites were the descendants of Aaron through his son Kohath. Their special charge was to see after the bread for the table in the holy place. To prepare it meant to see that the 12 loaves were put on the table each sabbath, to replace those that had been there since the previous sabbath. This was according to the law in Lev 24:5-9.
