Uzzia the Ashterathite, Shama and Jehiel the sons of Hothan the Aroerite,

44. the Ashterathite ] i.e. inhabitant of Ashtaroth (1Ch 6:71 [56 Heb. ]), a city of Manasseh east of Jordan.

and Jehiel the sons of Hothan ] R.V. and Jeiel the sons of Hotham.

the Aroerite ] i.e. inhabitant of Aroer. There were two cities of this name, both east of Jordan; cp. Jos 13:16; Jos 13:25.

The Aroerite; so called possibly because his station and quarters were upon the river Aroer beyond Jordan, being placed there for the defence of those parts.
