Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of 1 Chronicles 18:12
Moreover Abishai the son of Zeruiah slew of the Edomites in the valley of salt eighteen thousand.
12. Abishai the son of Zeruiah ] In 2Sa 8:13 David, and in Psalms 60 (title) Joab, receives the credit of this victory. Probably Abishai commanded in the battle, while Joab (cp. 1Ki 11:16) completed the conquest of the country.
of the Edomites ] Lit. “of Edom,” so Psalms 60 (title), but in 2 Sam. “of the Syrians,” lit. “Aram.” The two words “Edom” and “Aram” when written in Heb. are very much alike and are easily confused. The reading “Edom” is right here. Cp. Kirkpatrick on 2Sa 8:13.
the valley of salt ] Probably the marshy flat ( Bdeker, p. 144) at the S. end of the Dead Sea. This valley is dominated by the Jebel Usdum, a hill consisting “almost entirely of pure crystallised salt” ( Bdeker, p. 143).
eighteen thousand ] Psalms 60 (title), “twelve thousand,” not an important variation.

Verse 12. Abishai – slew of the Edomites] This victory is attributed to David, 2Sa 8:13. He sent Abishai against them, and he defeated them: this is with great propriety attributed to David as commander-in-chief; qui facit per alterum, facit per se.

(12) Moreover Abishai . . .Heb., And Abishai son of Zeruiah had smitten Edom in the Valley of Salt, eighteen thousand.
In Samuel we read something quite different: And David made a name, when he returned from his smiting Aram. Aram should be read Edom, as the LXX., Syriac, and Arabic have it. Perhaps, also, the text of Samuel is further corrupted. (Comp. 1Ki. 11:15. and Psalms 60, title.) From a comparison of the three passages it appears that Edom took advantage of Davids absence to invade Judah, whereupon the king detached a column of his forces, and sent them south under Joab and Abishai to repulse the new enemy.

The equity and righteous reign of David serves to remind us of Jesus, of whom it is said, Behold a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment. Isa 32:1 .

eighteen thousand. This was Abishai’s command. In 2Sa 8:13 we have David’s command; while in Psa 60 (title, Psa 60:1) we have Joab’s share in the campaign (1Ki 11:16). There is no contradiction, but independent and separate exploits. Abishai’s number was 18,000. We do not know how long Abishai’s took him. Joab’s (which took him six months longer) was 10,000.

OTHER VICTORIES OF DAVID BY ABISHAI
“Moreover Abishai the son of Zeruiah smote of the Edomites in the Valley of Salt eighteen thousand. And he put garrisons in Edom; and all the Edomites became servants to David. And Jehovah gave victory to David whithersoever he went.”
These verses are parallel with 2Sa 8:1-14. The Chronicler made no mention of David’s extreme cruelty to the Moabites; but otherwise there are few variations.
E.M. Zerr:
1Ch 18:12. Abishai was one of David’s mighty men. This verse is put in at this place because it is another item in the long list of the exploits against the numerous foes of the Israelites. The 1 Chronicles 18 : was a broad open plain just south of the Dead Sea. This Sea was otherwise called Salt Sea, which accounts for the name of this valley. The territory of the Edomites was not far from the Dead Sea.
1Ch 18:13. See 1Ch 18:6 for explanation of the garrisons and their use. The ability to plant them was evidence of success against an enemy, hence the words thus the Lord preserved David.
