The pattern … – literally, the pattern of all that was with him in the spirit; perhaps to be paraphrased, the form of all that floated before his mind. It seems to be Davids spirit, not Gods Spirit, that is here spoken of.

And the pattern of all, for even the pattern of all; for this clause belongs both to the foregoing and the following particulars.

By the spirit; by the Spirit of God, as is evident from 1Ch 27:19. For seeing all the particulars of the tabernacle built by Moses were suggested to him by Gods Spirit, by which even the workmen were inspired, Exo 25:40; 31:3, it is not credible that God would use less care and exactness in the building of this far more glorious and durable work.

Of all the chambers, & c.; all which were within the courts, or adjoining to them, as the other chambers, 1Ch 27:11, were adjoined to the house.

Ver. 12 And the pattern of all that he had by the Spirit,…. By the Spirit of God, who gave him the whole form of the temple, and all things relative to it; just as God showed to Moses the pattern of the tabernacle in the mount; the Targum is, by the spirit of prophecy that was with him. The Jews suppose that Samuel the prophet was first made acquainted with it, and he made it known to David:

of the courts of the house of the Lord: the outward court, the court of the priests, c.

and of all the chambers round about: see 1Ki 6:5

of the treasuries of the house of God, and of the treasuries of the dedicated things of the difference of which, see 1Ch 26:20.

(12) And the pattern of all that he had by the spirit.Rather, the pattern of all that was (or had come to be) in the spirit with him: i.e., had come into his mind; the whole design as it lay in his mind. (Comp. the phrase in 1Ch. 28:2 : with my heart it was to build. See 1Ch. 28:19, which attributes the design of the Temple to Divine inspiration.)

12. The pattern of all that he had by the Spirit Rather, of all that was in spirit with him; that is, of all that was pictured or conceived in his own mind. The words do not warrant the explanation, all that was shown him by the Holy Spirit.

by the Spirit. Hebrew “by the Spirit (ruach. App-9) with (or in) me”. The pattern without, and the worship within, all of God. Nothing can be offered in worship but what comes from God (Joh 4:24). Therefore said to be built by David in intention, and by Solomon in fact.

MANY OTHER DETAILS GIVEN BY DAVID TO SOLOMON

“And the pattern of all that he had by the Spirit for the courts of the house of Jehovah, and for all the chambers round about, for the treasuries of the house of God, and for the treasuries of the dedicated things; also for the courses of the priests and the Levites, and for all the work of the service of the house of Jehovah; of gold by weight for the vessels of gold, for all vessels for every kind of service; by weight also for the candlesticks of gold, and for the lamps thereof, of gold, by weight for every candlestick and for the lamps thereof; and for the candlesticks of silver, silver by weight for every candlestick and for the lamps thereof, according to the use of every candlestick; and the gold by weight for the tables of show-bread, for every table; and silver for the tables of silver; and the flesh-hooks, and the basins, and the cups, of pure gold; and the golden bowls by weight for every bowl; and for the altar of incense refined gold by weight; and gold for the pattern of the chariot, even the cherubim, that spread out their wings, and covered the ark of the covenant of Jehovah. All this, said David, have I been made to understand in writing from the hand of Jehovah, even all the works of this pattern.”

The very names, descriptions and instructions regarding all of these things were derived by David from the Mosaic Law as given in the Pentateuch. Any good reference Bible lists the following references in this single paragraph to the Law of Moses: Exo 20:16; Exo 25:9; Exo 25:18-22; Exo 25:37; Exo 26:31-37; Exo 28:16; Exo 30:1-19; Exo 30:34; and Exo 36:9; Lev 16:2; Lev 16:14-15; and Num 1:47. Thus, what we have here is David’s relay of the instructions Moses received from God for the building of the tabernacle accommodated to the requirements of the temple. We know that Solomon did not strictly follow David’s instructions; and there were enough departures from the true pattern to justify the author of the Book of Hebrews in by-passing the Jewish Temple altogether and going back to the tabernacle for all of true symbolism supposed to be in the temple.

“David said, I have been made to understand in writing from the hand of Jehovah all the works of this pattern (1Ch 28:19). These words are another reference to the Mosaic Law where David read the pattern of the tabernacle, and which pattern Solomon was supposed to follow in the construction of the temple. The proof of this is in the general correspondence of the temple in all of its truly important features to the ancient tabernacle. The variations and changes imposed upon the temple by Solomon should not be charged to David.

E.M. Zerr:

1Ch 28:11-12. God was very considerate of David even though he would not permit him to build the temple. He gave him the pattern by the spirit, which means he was inspired in delivering it to his son. More will be said on this subject at 1Ch 28:19.

1Ch 28:13. God directed David as to the courses or turns of the priests, and he handed the instructions over to Solomon. Verse 14. All metal has weight, but the expression by weight means that David had it weighed and did not leave it for his workmen to guess at.

1Ch 28:15. According to the use means the weight of the metal allotted to each piece was according to its needs, depending on the service to be had from it.

1Ch 28:16-18. When Solomon built the temple he reproduced, in enlarged form, all the vessels and furniture that had been in the tabernacle service, except the ark. That had been housed in a special tent by David, and Solomon did not reproduce it.

1Ch 28:19. Hand is from YAD and Strong defines it, “a primitive word; a hand (the open one [indicating power, means, direction, etc.] in distinction from a closed one).” So the verse means God gave David the power to write the description of the temple to be erected by Solomon. There should be no questioning of the work of Solomon in the vast architecture he used in the building. If the temple was not constructed as God wanted it, the rear son was that the divine pattern was not followed. We cannot conclude that, for the Lord blessed the building at the prayer and dedication.

1Ch 28:12. The pattern of all he had by the Spirit By the Spirit of God, as is evident from 1Ch 28:19. All the particulars of the tabernacle built by Moses were suggested to him by Gods Spirit, and it is not credible that God would use less care and exactness in the building of this far more glorious and durable work. All this, it seems, was given him in writing, probably by the ministry of an angel. The temple was to be a sacred thing, a type of Christ, of his church, and of heaven. Therefore it was not to be contrived by mans invention, but to be framed by divine institution. So Christ the true temple, the church, the gospel temple, and heaven, the everlasting temple, are all framed according to the divine counsels, and the plan laid before the world began. It is supposed, the tabernacle of Moses, with all its utensils, being wanted no more, was laid up here.
