Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, [that is so] great?
10. go out and come in ] The phrase denotes the transaction of business of all kinds.
judge ] Although every village by its headmen dispensed its own justice to its inhabitants, yet enough cases too hard for local decision remained over to make the king’s judicial functions of very great importance; cp. 2Sa 14:4 ff; 2Sa 15:2-4.

(10) Give me now wisdom and knowledge.Now wisdom and knowledge give thou me; a petition co-ordinate with that of 2Ch. 1:9 : Now, O Lord God, &c. The clause answers to 1Ki. 3:9. The word rendered knowledge (madda) is late, and occurs besides only in Dan. 1:4; Dan. 1:17; Ecc. 10:20.

For who can judge.The simple impf.; Kings has, who is able to judge?

2Ch 1:10. Give me now wisdom and knowledge Like a genuine son of David and Abraham, he chose spiritual blessings rather than temporal. That I may go out and come in before this people This is a proverbial speech for governing the people both at home and abroad, in peace and war. See Num 27:17; Deu 31:2. For who can judge this thy people, that is so great? Among such a numerous people he knew there would be so many, and so various, and, many times, difficult cases brought before him, that it would be impossible for him to hear them and judge aright, without wisdom more than human. See note on 1Ki 3:9.
