Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of 2 Chronicles 7:21
And this house, which is high, shall be an astonishment to every one that passeth by it; so that he shall say, Why hath the LORD done thus unto this land, and unto this house?
21. which is high ] Reader, which was high. The past tense is used by a kind of anticipation, as though the Speaker spoke from a later standpoint than the age of Solomon.

Verse 21. Shall be an astonishment] The manner in which these disobedient people have been destroyed is truly astonishing: no nation was ever so highly favoured, and none ever so severely and signally punished.

(21) And this house, which is high.A correction of Kings: and this house shall be high, which appears meaningless in the context. But the Syriac (and Arabic) here and in Kings has, And this house shall be laid waste (nehw hreb); and the Targum of Kings combines both readings thus: And this house which is high shall be laid waste (yh harb). It appears, therefore, that the original reading of the Heb. text was, And this house shall become ruinous heaps (yn, heaps, not elyn, high). (Comp. Mic. 3:12. The mistake is as old as the LXX., .)
Shall be an astonishment to every one that passeth by it.Every one that passeth by it shall be astonished: , LXX. Syriac, Every one that passeth by it shall stop and shake his head, and sway with his hand, and say . . . Kings adds, and shall hiss (certainly original).
