Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of 2 Chronicles 15:18

And he brought into the house of God the things that his father had dedicated, and that he himself had dedicated, silver, and gold, and vessels.

18. the things that his father had dedicated ] Probably spoils of war; cp. 1Ch 18:11. The verse seems to say that Abijah had wowed a portion of his spoils, but that Asa first actually presented them in the Temple. May we not take the passage (which occurs also in 1 Kin.) as an indirect confirmation of Abijah’s victory (2 Chronicles 13)?

Verse 18. The things that his father had dedicated] As it was a custom to dedicate a part of the spoils taken from an enemy to the service and honour of God, it is natural to suppose that Abijah, having so signally overthrown Jeroboam, (2Ch 13:15-19,) had dedicated a part of the spoils to the Lord; but they had not been brought into the temple till this time.

Silver, and gold, and vessels.] The word kelim, which we translate vessels, signifies instruments, utensils, ornaments, &c.

and that he himself haddedicatedof the booty taken from the Ethiopians. Both of thesewere now deposited in the temple as votive offerings to Him whoseright hand and holy arm had given them the victory.

(18) And he brought into the house of God.The verse is identical with 1Ki. 15:15, substituting God for Jehovah. The things that his father had dedicated were, doubtless, taken from the spoils after Abijahs great victory over Jeroboam (2Ch. 13:16-19); and the things that he himself had dedicated were a portion of the Cushite booty (2Ch. 14:13-15).

The brief reference contained in that single verse of Kings is thus an evident confirmation of the chroniclers narrative concerning the victories of Abijah and Asa, which he alone records.
