Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of 2 Chronicles 23:8
So the Levites and all Judah did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest had commanded, and took every man his men that were to come in on the sabbath, with them that were to go [out] on the sabbath: for Jehoiada the priest dismissed not the courses.

for Jehoiada the priest dismissed not the courses ] Not in Kings. The Levites (1Ch 23:6), the priests ( ibid. 1Ch 24:1), and the king’s army ( ibid. 1Ch 27:1 ff.) were each divided into “courses,” but it is clear from the context that courses of Levites are meant here.

The account of the occupation of the temple thus arranged agrees with 2Ki 11:9-11. Instead of (Kings), in 2Ch 23:8 are very fittingly named “the Levites (as in 2Ch 23:5) and all Judah,” viz., in its chiefs, since the high priest had assured himself of the support of the heads of the fathers’-houses of Israel (2Ch 23:2). Further, to the statement that those who were departing from the service also took part in the affair, it is added, “for Jehoiada had not dismissed the courses.” are the divisions which, according to the arrangement made by David (1 Chron 24-26), had charge of the temple service at that time. To the captains Jehoiada gave the spears and shields which had been presented to the temple by David as offerings, because they had come into the temple without weapons; see on 2Ki 11:10. , “and he caused the whole people to take position,” is connected formally with , 2Ch 23:9; while in 2Ki 11:11, we have simply .

(8) The Levites and all Judah.2Ki. 11:9 reads, the captains of the hundreds. The rest of the verse is the same in both narratives so far as the words go out on the Sabbath.
For Jehoiada the priest dismissed not the courses. The companies of priests and Levites, whose weekly duties had been fulfilled, and who under ordinary circumstances would have been formally dismissed by the high priest, were detained at the present emergency as auxiliaries to their brethren who were coming in.
Instead of this clause Kings has: And they came to Jehoiada the priest, i.e., the captains of the hundreds came, to him; a remark which quite naturally preludes the statement of the next verse both there and here.

LONG LIVE THE KING!
“So the Levites and all Judah did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded: and they took every man his men, those that were to come in on the sabbath; with those that were to go out on the sabbath; for Jehoiada the priest dismissed not the courses. And Jehoiada the priest delivered to the captains of hundreds the spears, and bucklers, and shields, that had been king David’s, which were in the house of God. And he set all the people, every man with his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the house to the left side of the house, along by the altar and the house, by the king round about. Then they brought out the king’s son, and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony, and made him king: and Jehoiada and his sons anointed him; and they said, Long live the king!”
E.M. Zerr:
2Ch 23:8. The orders of Jehoiada were obeyed to the letter. Dismissed not the courses refers to the courses or turns that David had instituted for the priests, after the eligible men became too numerous to be needed at the same time. (1 Chronicles 24.) But the occasion now is exceptional, and called for the combined service of all eligible men.
2Ch 23:9. As possible violence was feared, the priest gave the men the weapons that had belonged to David, the first king of the tribe of Judah.
2Ch 23:10. The spot selected for the crowning act was in front of the temple, facing the altar. The armed men formed a guard that reached from side to side of the temple.
2Ch 23:11. Within this impressive setting the king was given his position. There, with the guard all ready for any possible emergency, a crown was placed on his head. The august formality was concluded with the anointing of the king by the priest and his sons, and the acclamation, “God save the king.”
