And Joseph answered and said, This [is] the interpretation thereof: The three baskets [are] three days:
18, 19. Joseph answered and said,This is the interpretationThe purport was that in three dayshis execution should be ordered. The language of Joseph describesminutely one form of capital punishment that prevailed in Egypt;namely, that the criminal was decapitated and then his headless bodygibbeted on a tree by the highway till it was gradually devoured bythe ravenous birds.

And Joseph answered and said,…. Immediately, directly, without any further thought and meditation, being divinely instructed:
this [is] the interpretation thereof; of the above dream:
the three baskets [are] three days; signify three days.

‘And Joseph answered and said, “This is its interpretation. The three baskets are three days. Within yet three days will Pharaoh lift off your head from you and will hang you on a tree, and the birds will eat your flesh from off you.” ’
Will Pharaoh lift off your head.’ There is a play on words here contrasting this lifting off of the head with the lifting up of the head of the cupbearer. ‘And will hang you on a tree and the birds will eat your flesh.’ The death described is probably an indication that the baker is to be seen as guilty of a heinous crime (compare Deu 21:22 for a similar death).
In interpreting the dreams Joseph was probably well aware that in three days time it was Pharaoh’s birthday. Thus with God’s guidance he recognised the significance of the threes. The remainder of the dreams he was able to work out fairly easily, and the writer certainly intends us to recognise that again he enjoyed the guidance of God (verse 8). The answers may seem obvious once explained but it is not something on which Joseph could afford to be wrong.

And Joseph answered, &c. ] It is probable he used some preface to this sad destiny he reads him; as Philo brings him in saying, I would thou hadst not dreamed such a dream: a or as Daniel prefaced to Nebuchadnezzar; “My lord, the dream be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation to thine enemies.” Dan 4:19 If ministers, God’s interpreters, must be mannerly in the form, yet in the matter of their message they must be resolute. a Not only toothless, but bitter truths must be told, however they be taken. “If I yet please men, I should not be the servant of Christ.” Gal 1:10
