Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Ezra 2:23

The men of Anathoth, a hundred twenty and eight.

23. Anathoth ] One of the towns assigned to the priests (Jos 21:18; 1Ch 6:60), the dwelling-place of Abiathar the high-priest (1Ki 2:26) and of the prophet Jeremiah (Jer 1:1; Jer 29:27). See Isa 10:28; Isa 10:30.

It is situated about 4 miles N.E. of Jerusalem, the modern Anata.

The name shows that the place in prehistoric times was a centre for the worship of the goddess Anath or Anta.

23. The men of AnathothIt ispleasant to see so many of this Jewish town returning. It was a cityof the Levites; but the people spurned Jeremiah’s warning and calledforth against themselves one of his severest predictions (Jer32:27-35). This prophecy was fulfilled in the Assyrian conquest.Anathoth was laid waste and continued a heap of ruins. But thepeople, having been brought during the captivity to a better state ofmind, returned, and their city was rebuilt.
