And to carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counselors have freely offered unto the God of Israel, whose habitation [is] in Jerusalem,

to carry ] The LXX. mistaking two very similar letters (reading for ) render .
whose habitation is in Jerusalem ] i.e. whose temple is in Jerusalem.

And to carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counsellors have freely offered unto the God of Israel, whose habitation is in Jerusalem. In the temple built there; for the service of which, either for purchasing and procuring vessels that were wanting in it, or for sacrifices to be offered in it, the king and his nobles had made a voluntary contribution, and intrusted and sent Ezra with it.

Ezr 7:15 And to carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counsellors have freely offered unto the God of Israel, whose habitation [is] in Jerusalem,
Ver. 15. Which the king and his counsellors have freely offered ] This king, as he had been well bred by his mother, Queen Esther, so he had likely been well instructed by Ezra in the knowledge of the God of heaven (as he calleth him), whose service he thus promoteth. So Origen wrought much upon Alexander Severus the emperor, by his sound doctrine and holy conversation; but especially upon his mother, Mammaea, who became a great friend to the persecuted Christians.

Ezr 7:15-16. Which the king and his counsellors have freely offered unto the God of Israel This shows that they had a high opinion of the God of Israel, and were desirous of his favour. And all the silver and gold that thou canst find That is, procure, as , shechach, often signifies. Whatsoever thou canst get of my subjects, by way of free gift. With the free-will-offering of the people Namely, of Israel.
