And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
29. mischief befall him ] Cf. Gen 42:4; Gen 42:38.
with sorrow ] Heb. evil. “Evil” in the sense of “trouble,” as in Psa 107:26, or “calamity,” as in Pro 24:16, a different word from “sorrow” in Gen 42:38.
the grave ] Heb. Sheol. See ch. Gen 37:35, Gen 42:38.

And if ye take this also from me,…. His son Benjamin, as he perhaps suspected they had taken Joseph, and made away with him:
and mischief befall him; either in Egypt, or on the road, going or returning, any ill accident, especially death, as the Targums of Onkelos and Jonathan, or what may issue in it:
ye shall bring my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave; it would be the means of his death, and while he lived he should be full of sorrow and grief; see Ge 42:38.

my gray hairs. Figure of speech Metonymy (of Adjunct). App-6. = “me, in my old age”.
the grave. Hebrew. Sheol. See note on Gen 37:35, and App-35. The whole phrase is a Euphemism (App-6) for “ye will kill me”; so Gen 44:31, “he will die”.
