Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Isaiah 45:25

In the LORD shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.

25. be justified ] lit. be righteous, i.e. “enjoy righteousness” in the same sense as Isa 45:24. Comp. Jer 23:6 (“Jehovah our Righteousness”).

In the Lord – It shall be only in Yahweh that they shall find justification, and this must mean, that it is by his mercy and grace. The entire passage here, I suppose, has reference to the times of the Redeemer (see the notes at Isa 45:21-24). If so, it means that justification can be obtained only by the mercy of God through a Redeemer. The great truth is, therefore, here brought into view, which constitutes the sum of the New Testament, that people are not justified by their own works, but by the mercy and grace of God.

All the seed of Israel – All the spiritual seed or descendants of Jacob. It cannot mean that every individual shall be justified and saved, for the Bible abundantly teaches the contrary (see Mat 8:11-12; Rom. 11) But it must mean that all who have a character resembling that of Israel, or Jacob; all who are the true children and friends of God (see Rom 2:28-29; Rom 4:9-13).

Be justified – Be regarded and treated as righteous. Their sins shall be pardoned, and they shall be acknowledged and treated as the children of God (see the notes at Rom 3:24-25). To justify, here, is not to pronounce them innocent, or to regard them as deserving of his favor; but it is to receive them into favor, and to resolve to treat them as if they had not sinned; that is, to treat them as if they were righteous. All this is by the mere mercy and grace of God, and is through the merits of thc Redeemer, who died in their place.

And shall glory – Or rather, shall praise and celebrate his goodness. The word used here ( chalal) means, in the Piel, to sing, to chant, to celebrate the praises of anyone 1Ch 16:36; Psa 44:9; Psa 117:1; Psa 145:2, and is the word of which the word hallelujah is in part composed. Here it means, that the effect of their being justified by Yahweh would be, that they would be filled with joy, and would celebrate the goodness of God. This effect of being justified, is more fully stated in Rom 5:1-5. It is a result which always follows; and a disposition to praise and magnify the name of God in view of his boundless mercy in providing a way by which sinners may be justified, is one of the first promptings of a renewed heart, and one of the evidences that a soul is born again.

Isa 45:25

In the Lord shall all the seed of Israel be justified

The believer justified and glorying in the Redeemer

This passage is prophetic of the Messiah Isa 45:23 is quoted in Rom 14:11, and applied to Christ.

I.
Let us then attend to the assertion that IN THE LORD SHALL THE SEED OF ISRAEL BE JUSTIFIED.

1. They are justified as it is through Him they obtain the forgiveness of their sins, and the acceptance of their persons in the sight of God.

2. As it is through Him they acquire a right to all the privileges of the children of God in a present and future state.

II.
HOW WE OUGHT TO GLORY IN HIM BY WHOM WE ARE THUS JUSTIFIED.

1. By entertaining suitable affections towards our Divine Redeemer.

2. Those who glory in Christ must avow their regard to Him before the world, and particularly by a frequent and devout attendance on the ordinances of the Gospel.

3. We must glorify Him by an active and steady zeal to promote the interests of His kingdom.

4. The seed of Israel are to glorify Christ by their patience and constancy under all their afflictions, especially those that are endured for His sake. (A. Hunter, D. D.)

All the seed of Israel; all Israelites indeed, whether Jews or Gentiles; all believers, who are frequently called Gods Israel in Scripture, as Psa 24:6; Rom 9:6; 11:26; Gal 6:16.

Justified; acquitted both from real guilt before God, and from all false aspersions before the world; for this justification of the true Israel is opposed to their enemies being ashamed, Isa 45:24, which seems to design their public shame and confusion before God and men.

Shall glory; shall not only receive him, but shall rejoicer and triumph in him as their God and portion.

In the Lord shall all the seed of Israel be justified,…. All the spiritual Israel of God, whether Jews or Gentiles; all the spiritual seed and offspring of Christ, to whom he stands in the relation of the, everlasting Father and federal Head; these being given to him, and being in him, are justified in him from all things; and these, all and everyone, shall be brought to see their need of his righteousness, and look to him for it, and receive it from him by faith; and be manifestatively justified in their own consciences, as they will be openly at the bar of God, before angels and men, hereafter. The Targum is,

“”in” or by the Word of the Lord all the seed of Israel shall be justified:”

and shall glory; in Christ, as the Lord their righteousness; not in themselves, in their own righteousness, holiness, wisdom, and strength, but in this, that Christ is made to them wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption, 1Co 1:30.

25. In Jehovah shall be justified. He now makes a brief reply to an objection which might be urged, that it appeared absurd to say, that the Lord called the Gentiles, who had always been alienated from him. “Is it in vain that the Lord hath chosen the seed of Abraham? Is his promise void, which he so frequently repeated?” (Gen 15:5.) In order to remove this doubt, he declares that the Lord will nevertheless stand by his promises; that, though he choose the Gentiles, yet the covenant which he made with the fathers shall not fall to the ground, because the elect people shall enjoy the privileges of their rank. Nor does he in this passage, as in many others, speak of the rejection of that nation; but the Prophet simply shews that the grace of God, which shall be diffused throughout the whole world, shall flow from that fountain.

As to the greater number having been rejected by God, still this did not set aside God’s covenant; because the remnant of adoption were always the true and lawful Israel; and although they were few in number, yet they were the first-born in the Church. Besides, all those among the Gentiles who had been ingrafted into that body began also, as we have formerly seen, to be accounted children of Abraham.

One shall say, I belong to Jacob; another shall subscribe with his band, I am a descendant of Israel.” (Isa 44:5.)

And on this ground we are now reckoned the genuine Israel of God, though we are not the descendants of Israel. The Prophet therefore added this, both that the Jews might not think that the Lord’s covenant had failed, and that they might not boast of their birth and despise the Gentiles.

All the seed of Israel. He extends this seed farther, that they may not suppose that it ought to be limited to the family of Abraham; for the Lord gathers his people without distinction from among Jews and Gentiles, and here he speaks universally of the whole human race.

Shall be justified and shall glory. It ought to be observed that the Prophet says that we “are justified and glory in the Lord,” for in none else ought we to seek “righteousness” or “glory.” He has joined to it “glory,” which depends on “righteousness,” and is added to it. Hence also Paul says,

Where is thy glorying? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith.” (Rom 3:27.)

And, again,

If Abraham was justified by works, he hath glory, but not before God.” (Rom 4:2.)

It follows, therefore, that they alone deservedly glory who seek their righteousness in God, and acknowledge that in themselves they have no ground for glorying.

(25) In the Lord.We note the germ of the New Testament thought of the mystic union of man with God, in the phrases in the Lord, in the Holy Spirit, in Christ, which embody that thought. Jehovah is the sphere, or region, in which men live and move and have their being. The seed of Israel, as interpreted by Isa. 45:23, includes all who have joined themselves to the true Israel of God.

REFLECTIONS

PONDER over this lovely Chapter, my soul, again and again, not dismiss the sweet meditation, until the Holy Ghost hath written the blessed contents of it in thine inmost affection. Behold the Lord’s love to Israel, in preparing the Church, during so many years, for their temporal deliverer; and calling him by his name, Cyrus, before Cyrus was even born. Then turn thy thoughts to the Lord Jesus Christ, and contemplate the grace of God the Father, in the appointment and proclamation of him, the glorious spiritual deliverer of his redeemed, from all eternity. Thou, O blessed Jesus, hast indeed opened the two-leaved gates; yea, the everlasting gates of heaven and salvation, and made thy people joyful, and the loins of thine enemies to be smitten asunder! Thou hast made known thy sovereignty and power, and manifested that thou art God, and that there is none else beside thee, a just God and a Saviour!

And now, thou blessed Lord! having made peace by the blood of thy cross, to reconcile all things to thyself, dost thou open a new and living way by thy blood, and ever livest to keep it open by thine intercession? Yea, precious Jesus! dost thou so endear a throne of grace to thy people, as to assure us, that the works of thine hands are subject to the prayers of thy saints: that whatsoever shall be for thy glory and their good, they may command, and it shall be done! Oh! for grace to lie lower and lower in the dust before God, in proportion as the riches of thy grace are made manifest to the soul, that while the Lord exalts his people, they may humble themselves.

I dare not, Lord! dismiss this precious chapter, without first seeking for grace to convert thy command into a prayer, that while thou biddest me to look unto thee, my soul may feel the grace going forth into lively exercise, so to look to Jesus, as to have mine eyes enlightened, and to rest by faith upon Jesus, until my whole soul be warmed into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Jesus Christ! Blessed Lord! I do pray, that mine eyes, mine heart, my whole soul and body and spirit, yea, all the faculties thou hast given me, may bow in love, and grace, and praise, and prayer, before thee. Let all the earth witness for me; yea, all the powers of heaven, that to thee my knee bows; before thee my whole nature joyfully bends. Surely in the Lord have I righteousness and strength. In the Lord do all my powers find justification, and glory, in Christ here, and in Christ to all eternity. Amen.
