Verse 12. They are laid desolate, they are given us to consume.] They exulted in seeing Judea overrun; and they rejoiced in the prospect of completing the ruin, when the Chaldeans had withdrawn from the land.

Thou didst reproach, scoff, and vilify my people, as if they had been the people of some deaf idol; but I will make thee know I am the Lord, who heard all thy blasphemies, and can, for I have punished them. Which thou hast spoken; not speaking this without insulting and rejoicing, as Tyre did, Eze 26.
Saying, Their God hath left them, either unable to rescue them, or changed in his kindness, and gone back from his word; or some such-like impious thoughts and discourses they had against God, whose city and temple they saw the Babylonians ruin, and which Edomites helped in doing.
Given us; either by the Chaldeans, or else by God.
To consume; utterly to consume, and to satisfy our hatred against them in the destruction of them.

12, 13. blasphemies . . . against .. . Israel . . . against meGod regards what is done againstHis people as done against Himself (Mat 25:45;Act 9:2; Act 9:4;Act 9:5). Edom implied, ifhe did not express it, in his taunts against Israel, that God had notsufficient power to protect His people. A type of the spirit of allthe foes of God and His people (1Sa 2:3;Rev 13:6).

And thou shall know that I am the Lord,…. By the judgments executed upon Edom, and so upon antichrist; for God is known by the judgments he executes, both by good and bad men, Ps 9:16:
and that I have heard all thy blasphemies which thou hast spoken against the mountains of Israel; the people of Israel and Judah literally, and the churches and people of God figuratively: so antichrist is said to open his mouth in blasphemies, and to blaspheme the tabernacle of God, and them that dwell in heaven; that is, the church of God, and the saints of the most High; which are heard and observed by the Lord, and resented by him, and for which he will punish, Re 13:6:
saying, they are laid desolate, they are given up to consume; or, “for food” z; to possess and live upon; the inhabitants of them being carried captive or slain, so that there were none to enjoy the fruits of them; and therefore the Edomites concluded that the Israelites were forsaken of God, and that he would no more regard them, and that their land was theirs, which gave them great joy; see Re 11:10.

(12) Blasphemies.Rather, reproaches. These indeed became, under the circumstances, constructively blasphemies against God; but it is better not to push the meaning further than was intended.

Eze 35:12, The things the Edomites had said about the land of Israel might all have been true, but their motive in saying them was displeasing to God. He never would tolerate a spirit of triumph against His people no matter how much they deserved the chastisement or misfortunes. And such an attitude would be doubly offensive if it was claimed that the loss or misfortunes were brought for the benefit of the foes.
