Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Ezekiel 42:10

Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Ezekiel 42:10

The chambers [were] in the thickness of the wall of the court toward the east, over against the separate place, and over against the building.

10. thickness of the wall ] Probably: at the beginning (or, head) of the wall (cf. Eze 42:12). The “wall” is that piece of wall referred to Eze 42:7, and the “beginning of it” is the point where the way enters from the outer court, Fig. 3, P. In Eze 46:19 this is stated to have been at the shoulder (the long side) of the N. gate. It is said that the doors into the chambers were from the “walk” of 100 cubits long fronting the longer wing (Fig. 3, O), and possibly also that this walk led into the inner court ( Eze 42:4), consequently the entrance-way from the outer court must have lain as far east as the end of this “walk,” which it led to and so reached the chambers. The area of 100 50 on which the cells stood, though not wholly covered by the cells, must have been in some way marked off from the general level of the court, and the entrance-way from the outer court was on the east front of it; and it was probably in this entrance-way that the prophet had his position ( Eze 42:1-9), Fig. 3. Q.

10. For “east” must be read south, according to Eze 42:12-13 and the whole scope; cf. Ezek. 44:44. The “building” as in Eze 42:1 is the wall of the outer court with its stories of cells, Fig. 3, B, C. On the one side the chambers faced the separate place, and on the other side the shorter wing looked towards the buildings in the outer court.

10 12. The corresponding chambers on the south side of the temple-house. The text is undoubtedly in great confusion; and has been amended in various ways. Taken as nearly as possible as it stands it reads: “Towards the south, over against the separate place and over against the (wall-) building, there were chambers, 11 with a way before them, like the appearance of the chambers which were towards the north, as long as they and as broad as they, and according to all their goings out, and according to their fashions. And according to their doors, 12 so were the doors of the chambers that were toward the south; there was a door at the beginning of the way, to wit the way before the corresponding (?) wall, on the east as one entereth into them.”

Render it: Breadth-wise (was) the wall Eze 42:7 toward the east; in front of the separate place and of the building (were) the chambers: i. e., on the east was the wall (geder); along the boundary wall of the separate place and of the building (the temple) lay the chambers.

The chambers, galleries also with them, of this south building now measured.

The thickness, or the breadth, of that wall of the court which was eastward, and as an enclosure of the building.

The separate place; which was west from this building, whose length lay north and south, and its breadth east and west: what this separate place may be, see Eze 42:1.

The building: see Eze 42:1.

The chambers were in the thickness of the wall of the court toward the east,…. As there were chambers in the northern part of the outward court, some which looked to the north, and others to the south, so likewise some to the east; and these were built on the breadth, as it may be rendered, of the court wall to the east; signifying there will be churches raised in all the northern parts of the world:

over against the separate place, and over against the building; as the other chambers were; [See comments on Eze 42:1].

‘There were chambers in the thickness of the wall of the court towards the east, before the separate place and before the building. And the way before them was like the appearance of the way of the chambers towards the north. According to their length so was their breadth. And all their exits were both according to their fashions and according to their doors.’

In the wall of the inner court (it was ‘before the separate place’ and ‘before the building’ – compare Eze 42:1) facing east there were also chambers, which were foursquare and built into the wall. They were in front of the temple yard and ‘the building’ (the sanctuary). They too had a walkway in front of them similar to that in front of the buildings towards the north. Their exits are dismissed briefly. Their look would depend on the particular pattern of workmanship adopted, and on the doors used. (Ezekiel is now hurrying on. He feels he has given sufficient detail. Again this confirms that this is not intended to be a blueprint, it is the description of an interested visitor to a ‘real’ building).

NASB (UPDATED) TEXT: Eze 42:10-12

10In the thickness of the wall of the court toward the east, facing the separate area and facing the building, there were chambers. 11The way in front of them was like the appearance of the chambers which were on the north, according to their length so was their width, and all their exits were both according to their arrangements and openings. 12Corresponding to the openings of the chambers which were toward the south was an opening at the head of the way, the way in front of the wall toward the east, as one enters them.

the thickness: Rather, “the breadth of the wall,” that is, the breadth of ground which it enclosed. Eze 41:12

over against: These south chambers were exactly like those on the north. Eze 42:1, Eze 42:13, Eze 41:13-15

Eze 42:10. In the thickness denotes the width of the chambers, and they were over against which means they were near the separate place, a description of which has been given elsewhere.

There was a corresponding structure on the south side of the temple proper, the mirror image of the one on the north. The Hebrew text describes this building as on the east, but it must have been on the south, as the Septuagint translators concluded, in view of the complete symmetry of the whole temple complex. It too stood between the outer court and the "separate area" and faced the temple building.
