Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Ezekiel 44:29

They shall eat the meat offering, and the sin offering, and the trespass offering; and every dedicated thing in Israel shall be theirs.

29. Cf. Lev 2:3; Lev 7:9-11, for the meat-offering; Lev 6:18; Lev 7:6-7; Num 18:9-10, for the sin- and trespass-offerings; and for that put to the ban or “devoted” to Jehovah, Lev 27:28; Num 18:14. For “dedicated” as marg. devoted.

We must not think that the whole of these were eat, God had his part, and the priest his part too; somewhat of each came to the priest.

Every dedicated thing; as first-fruits, and tithes, &c., the priest had part of them.

They shall eat the meat offering, and the sin offering, and the trespass offering,…. Which were typical of Christ; the meat offering, or rather bread offering, it being made of fine flour, was a type of Christ the bread of life; and the sin and trespass offerings pointed at his being made sin and a sacrifice for it; which the people and priests of the Lord in a spiritual sense eat, feed, and live upon by faith: and besides, as the priests under the law had a part in all these offerings, whereby they and their families were maintained, Le 2:3, so it is the will and ordination of Christ, that as those that ministered about holy things, and waited at the altar, should live of them, and partake with that, so they that preach the Gospel should live by it, 1Co 9:13:

and every dedicated thing in Israel shall be theirs; or, “every devoted thing” s; that is, to holy uses, what the people willingly offer to support the interest of religion; signifying that the ministers of the word shall live upon the free contributions of the people.

29-31. The priests lived from the temple offerings, having as theirs the meat offering (Lev 2:1-16; Lev 6:14-16; Lev 7:9-11; Num 28:12-13), the sin offering (Lev 6:18-29; Lev 7:6; Lev 7:17; Num 18:9-10), the trespass [ guilt ] offering (Lev 7:28-38), and every dedicated [ devoted ] thing in Israel (Lev 27:26; Lev 27:28; Num 18:14), and the first [or, best ] of all the first fruits of all things (Exo 23:19; Num 18:13), and every oblation, or, heave offering (Num 15:19; Num 18:19); that is, “any portion of one’s property offered to the deity in gratitude for past favors or in hope of future favors;” and the first of the dough or “coarse meal” (Num 15:20-21). The priest, as all the people, must be careful only to eat food properly killed (Exo 22:31; Deu 14:21; Lev 16:15; Lev 22:8). In the light of recent medical science this, like the majority of the Levitical injunctions, is seen to be a healthful precaution. (For kitchen of the priests see L on chart, facing page 209, and Eze 46:19-24.)

“They will eat the meal offering, and the sin offering, and the guilt offering, and every devoted thing in Israel shall be theirs. And the first of all the firstfruits of everything, and every gift of everything, of all your gifts, shall be for the priests. You will also give to your priests the first of your dough, to cause a blessing to rest on your house.”

God now makes provision for His dedicated priests. They may participate of meal offerings, and of the flesh of sin and guilt offerings (within the prescribed limits) – see Lev 2:3; Lev 2:10; Lev 5:13; Lev 6:18; Lev 6:26; Lev 7:6; Lev 7:9-10. Also anything dedicated to God by the people shall be theirs. These were “devoted” (Hebrew ‘herem’) things, things given that the offerer could not redeem (buy back – see Lev 27:21; Lev 27:28; Num 18:14). And all gifts given to God would also be theirs. This would include the first of the dough. The result for the people who give will blessing on their houses.
