Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat.
36. send them away ] Already earlier in the day the Lord had asked the Apostle Philip, Whence shall we buy bread that these may eat? and he, thinking of no other supplies save such as natural means could procure, had replied that two hundred pence would not suffice to provide sustenance for such a number (Joh 6:5-7). Then He left this confession of inability to work in their minds, and it was now in the eventide that the Apostles came to Him with the proposition contained in this verse.

Send them away,…. Leave off preaching, dismiss the assembly; see Mt 14:15;
that they may go into the country round about; or “into the fields”; that is, to the odd houses; which were here and there in the fields;

and buy themselves bread, for they have nothing to eat; they brought no provisions with them, and there were none to be had in that desert place; and it was high time they had some refreshment; for the usual time of dining was past, the first evening was come, the day was on the decline, and was far spent.

Into the country and villages round about ( ). The fields () were the scattered farms (Latin, villae). The villages () may have included Bethsaida Julias not far away (Lu 9:10). The other Bethsaida was on the Western side of the lake (Mr 6:45).

1) “Send them away,” (apoluson autous) “Dismiss them,” or send them away from us, Mat 14:15. The disciples recognized the hunger of the people, but did not have faith to believe that they could meet those needs, and they were determined to avoid such a responsibility!
2) “That they may go into the country round about,” (hina apelthontes eis tous kuklo agrous) “in order that they may go into the fields round about.” They would not go away unless sent, So needy were they of spiritual help that they were not, or were little conscious of their hunger, as one in a time of deep grief, Job 23:12.
3) “And into the villages,” (kai komas) ”And into the villages or the sleeping places,” places where they might sleep for the night.
4) “And buy themselves bread:” (agorasosin heautois) “And buy bread for themselves These people had a need for food that the disciples did not think they could meet or were not willing to meet.
5) ”For they have nothing to eat.” (ti phagosm) ”To buy what they may then eat,” Luk 9:12. Wherever there is a need, disciples of the Lord must recognize that their Lord can supply when they do all that they can to meet it, 1Co 10:13; Php_4:19.
