But Jesus took him by the hand,…. “Took hold of the hand of the child”, as the Persic version renders it;

and lifted him up; from the ground, on which he was cast by the spirit;

and he arose: this is omitted in the Syriac and Arabic versions, though in one edition of the latter, according to De Dieu, it is rendered, “and he stood”; to which is added, “and went into his own house”. The Persic version, instead of this clause, reads, “and the child was healed”; and all the expressions show, that he was perfectly well.

1) “But Jesus took him by the hand,” (ho de lesous kratesas tes cheiros autou) “Then Jesus, taking hold of his hand,” in tenderness, sympathy, and care, as Peter and John later did the lame man at the gate Beautiful, Act 3:7.

2) “And lifted him up;” (egeiren auton) “Raised or lifted (on) him,” higher than he had ever been lifted before, out of and away from his demon possession, and emotionally unstable condition forever, Ecc 3:14.

3) ”And he arose.” (kai aneste) “And he (the young man) just stood up,” healed, to go forth a different person, much as Saul of Tarsus, Act 9:5-7. The cure was sure from that hour, Mat 17:18.

27. Jesus took him by the hand Jesus now, in the place of the diabolical life, bestows upon him a true vitality which is at once natural and supernatural.

‘But Jesus took him by the hand and raised him up. And he arose.’

Whatever the boy’s condition it did not matter, for Jesus was there. ‘He took him by the hand.’ Compare Mar 1:31; Mar 5:41. ‘And raised him up, and he arose.’ Compare Mar 5:41-42. What He began He finished. And because Jesus was there the man’s weak faith in Him proved sufficient and the boy’s life began anew.

‘And he arose.’ Once again we have a picture of the resurrection, for it was a picture also of what could happen to the world if only they would believe. They could be delivered from the power of Satan to God (Act 26:18).

Jesus then cured the boy of his weakness so that he arose.

Mar 9:27. Took him by the hand. The usual external act which connected His person with the subject of a miracle.

And he arose, ox stood up. The cure was now complete, the childs own activity appearing. Mark alone tells of the successive steps. This mode of healing would serve to strengthen the fathers faith, and by showing the difficulty of the case, make the more powerful impression on the multitude, before whom the failure of the disciples and the debate with the scribes had occurred. The effect of the miracle is described by Luke (Luk 9:43). The vivid and detailed narrative must have been obtained from the recollections of an eye-witness.
