Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Luke 3:28
Which was [the son] of Melchi, which was [the son] of Addi, which was [the son] of Cosam, which was [the son] of Elmodam, which was [the son] of Er,
Ver. 28 Which was the son of Melchi,…. This, with the following, “Addi, Cosam, Elmodam, Er, Jose, Eliezer, Jorim, Matthat, Levi, Simeon, Juda, Joseph, Jonan, Eliakim, Melea, Menan, and Mattatha”, all lived before the captivity, and were of the house of David, in the line of Nathan; for it follows,
which was the son of Nathan: of which persons no mention is made in the Old Testament, nor even of Mattatha, the son of Nathan: his sons that are mentioned are Azariah, Zabud, and Ahishar, 1Ki 4:5 which last is thought to be the same with Mattatha: that Nathan was the son of David, as the order of things here directs,
which was the son of David, is clear from 2Sa 5:14.

1) “Which was the son of Melchi,” (tou Melchi) “The heir-son of Melchi,” which means “Jehovah’s king,” Jer 21:1.
2) “Which was the son of Add!,” (tou Addi) “The heir-son of Addi,” which name means, “ornament.”
3) “Which was the son of Cosam,” (tou Kosam) “The heir-son of Kosam,” the only known Bible usage of the name or mention of the person who will not be without his revealed reward one day, 1Co 3:8.
4) “Which was the son of Elmodam,” (tou Elmadam) “The heir-son of Elmadam,” same as the term Almodad which means “extension,” Gen 10:26.
5) “Which was the son of Er,” (tou Er) “The heir-son of Er,” which means “watchful”, Exo 38:3.
