The men of Nineveh shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it,…. Luke changes the order of these instances; Matthew mentions this before the instance of the queen of Sheba; but Luke puts it last: this circumstance is not material, and the design of it is the same with the former:

for they repented at the preaching of Jonas, and behold a greater than Jonas is here: what in this case will aggravate the condemnation of the Jews in the day of judgment is, that these men were Heathens, aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, and were not used to have prophets sent to them; and yet as soon as Jonas, a mere man, came to them, and preached but one sermon among them, they repented of their sins, and turned from them; whereas the Jews, who had a better notion of religion, and who, though they had the Son of God himself among them, and preached to them, and that many sermons, and whose ministry was confirmed by miracles, and afterwards his apostles for a course of years, had yet remained impenitent and unbelieving;

1) “The men of Nineve shall rise up In the judgment,” (andres Nineuitai anastesontai en W krisei) “Ninevite men will stand up (arise) in the judgment hour,” from that Gentile city, capital of’ Syria, to which Jonah preached repentance, Mat 12:41; Nah 1:1.

2) “With this generation, and shall condemn it:” (meta tes geneas tautes kai katakrinousin auten) “With this generation, and they will condemn it; “Believing, repentant Gentiles, will be a condemning witness against unbelieving Jews, and believing neighbors against unbelieving neighbors, or unconverted, impenitent neighbors, Luk 13:3; Luk 13:5; Act 17:30-31.

3) “For they repented at the preaching of Jonas;” (hoti meten oesan eis to kerugma Iona) “Because they repented at the heralding (preaching) of Jonah,” Mat 12:41; Jon 3:5-9. Jonah was a man of similar passions as we are, yet God used him, as one man to convert a city. He uses single persons wholly committed to His call and will, as He used Abraham, Moses, the maid of Samaria, Daniel, the Samaritan woman, and Saul of Tarsus.

4) “And, beheld, a greater than Jonah is here.” (kai idou pleion jona hode) “And behold (take note) a greater one than Jonah is (now exists) here.” confronting you all, Mat 12:41; Act 14:12.

32. ] Not ‘ a greater than Jonas ,’ or ‘ than Solomon: ’ but Jonah = the sign of Jonah, so that is He who is the sign to this generation: a sign, , both in its actuality , its significance , and its consequences . The order , here, seems to be for the sake of climax; for the undervaluing and not appreciating His wisdom , will not lie so heavy on them in the judgment, as the rejection of His preaching of repentance .

Luk 11:32. The men of Nineveh. If these Ninevites had not heard of the miracle, the contrast is even stronger. For in that case their repentance was simply at the preaching of Jonah, while the Jews remained unbelieving in the face of Christs resurrection as well as His preaching. There is a climax in the order of Luke; the greater sin was the rejection of Christs preaching of repentance.
