Verse 7. Fear not therefore] Want of faith in the providence and goodness of God is the source of all human inquietudes and fears. He has undertaken to save and defend those to the uttermost who trust in him. His wisdom cannot be surprised, his power cannot be forced, his love cannot forget itself. Man distrusts God, and fears that he is forgotten by him, because he judges of God by himself; and he knows that he is apt to forget his Maker, and be unfaithful to him. See on Mt 10:29-31.

But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered,…. Not only their persons had passed under the hands of him that telleth them, who is the “Palmoni”, or “wonderful numberer”, as in the margin of Da 8:13 and not only the several members of their bodies, or the more substantial parts of them, were written in the book of his purposes, according to which they were fashioned in time, but the more minute parts, and less to be regarded, were all told over, and kept in account; even the very hairs of their head, and not one of them could fall to the ground, any more than a sparrow; or be plucked off by men, without the knowledge and will of God; so careful is the providence of God, of all his people:

fear not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows; for if the hairs of their heads are as much regarded as sparrows, their persons and their lives must be of more account, than an infinite number of them, nor are they to be mentioned with them.

1) “But even the hairs of your head,” (alla kai hai triches tes kephales humon) “But even to the hairs of your head,” the total parts of the natural covering of your head, are in His computerized, invoiced, coverage-care. The simplicity of this illustration is with charm, emphasizes knowledge and care of His own.

2) “Are numbered.” (pasai erithmentai) “Have all been and are numbered,” Act 15:18, are identified numerically, because of His accurate care for you, Mat 10:30.

3) “Fear not therefore:” (me phobeisthe) “Do not be afraid,” affrighted, or fearful, in the light of this, Heb 13:5; Mat 10:31.

4) “Ye are of more value than many sparrows.” (pollon strouthion diapherete) “You all differ from many sparrows,” being of far more value. Yes, we are redeemed, immortal beings, children, servants, and stewards, of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ. Therefore, let us not live lives of fear, despond, or despair, Mat 15:20; 1Co 4:2; Rom 8:15; Rom 8:17.

The thought in the preceding verse is continued in this. Each hair (a small portion of man’s being) is counted by the Creator, which denotes that the whole person is of more value than the sparrows.

Verse 7

Fear not therefore; that is, be not anxious about the result, when in situations of danger; leave it for God to decide. The ground of the Christian’s peace of mind is not an assurance that his life will certainly be preserved, but that, although it may be lost, it can be lost only by God’s direction. In sickness, in a storm at sea, or in a besieged city, he can never be sure but that his summons, as well as that of others, is about to come. His composure and happiness, therefore, rest, not on a groundless presentiment that he shall live, but on a conviction that it is God who will decide whether he shall live or die. In regard to the sparrows, it is not said that they are always saved, but that not one of them is forgotten.
