Two [women] shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

Two [women] shall be grinding together,…. In
Mt 24:41 it is added, “in the mill”; in the house where the mill was, and at one and the same mill; and so the Ethiopic version here, “two shall grind in one mill”: and it was common for two women to grind at one hand mill; and though the word “women” is not in the text, it is rightly put into the translation; since the word used is of the feminine gender, and since grinding was the business of women; and so the Persic version here supplies it, as we do;

The one shall be taken and the other left; the Roman soldiers entering the mill, will lay hold on the one, and carry her away with them, and leave the other; and for which no other reason can be given, but the sovereign will and providence of God, which should overrule and dispose the minds of these men, to act in such a manner.

2) “The one shall be taken,” (he mia paralemphesetai) “The one will be taken along, up, and away,” Mat 24:41. The one who is prepared and watching, expecting, 1Th 5:1-6.
3) “And the other left.” (he de hjetera aphethesetai) “Yet the other, of a different kind, will be left,” at the place of grinding, Mat 24:41; At the unsuspecting moment to so many who look or watch not for my return, Mar 13:35-37; The one who was not prepared or watching shall be left, 2Th 1:6-10.

“There will be two women grinding together, the one will be taken, and the other will be left.”
The same picture is now applied to women grinding in the mill together, the one turning the stone, the other pouring in the grain. Very often this would be mother and daughter, or two sisters. But the one will be taken and the other left. No more vivid picture could be given of the ‘invisibility’ of the Kingly Rule of God, for no one, apart from the individuals, and they might be wrong, could be sure who was under the Kingly Rule of God and who was not (compare Luk 17:21).
