Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Luke 18:37

And they told him, that Jesus of Nazareth passeth by.

And they told him, that Jesus of Nazareth passeth by. Some of the company answered him, that Jesus, the prophet of Nazareth, so much talked of, and said to be the Messiah, who was become so famous for his doctrines and miracles, for healing diseases, and dispossessing devils, was just “then” passing by; and this occasioned the noise and clamour.

Passeth by (). Present middle indicative retained in indirect discourse as is in Mt 20:30. No reason for differences of English tenses in the two passages (was passing by, passeth by).

‘And they told him, that “Jesus of Nazareth passes by”.

He was immediately informed by the helpful crowd in festal mood that “Jesus of Nazareth passes by”. That Jesus was well known to him comes out in that the blind man knew who He was and that He was a son of David. The news excited him for he had heard stories of what Jesus could do.

‘Jesus of Nazareth’ was a name by which Jesus, with slight variations, was identified (Jesus was a common name and would require an appellation). It was used by evil spirits (Luk 4:34; Mar 1:24), by the serving girl who challenged Peter (Mar 14:67; Mat 26:71), by the resurrection angel (Mar 16:6) and by two of Jesus’ disciples when identifying Him to ‘a stranger’ (Luk 24:19).

The fame of Jesus was frequently connected with his humble home life. It was surprising that the product of such a community could perform the deeds attributed to him. (See Joh 1:46.)
