Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Luke 23:52
This [man] went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.
52 . went unto Pilate, and bogged the body of Jesus ] This was a bold, and might even have proved to be a perilous request. Hence the ‘boldly’ ( tolmesas) of Mar 15:43. Pilate seems to have granted the boon without a bribe because the Jewish care for burial was well known (Mat 14:12; Act 8:2; Jos. B. J. iv. 5, 2), and was indeed a part of their Law (Deu 21:23). This man went unto Pilate,…. Mark says, he went “boldly” to him; [See comments on Mr 15:43].
and begged the body of Jesus; knowing he was dead; that he might bury it, as the Ethiopic version adds, and prevent its being inferred with the two malefactors, or abused by the mob.
Asked for (). First aorist middle (indirect) indicative as in Mark 15:43; Matt 27:58. The middle voice shows that Joseph of Arimathea asked the body of Jesus as a personal favour.
1) “This man went unto Pilate,” (houtos peoselthon to Pilato) “This man approached Pilate,” went directly to him, a matter that took considerable courage for one in his position, Mat 27:58.
2) “And begged the body of Jesus.” (etesato to soma tou lesou) “And asked (for) the body of Jesus,” the corpse, desired to have it, craved it, to give it a decent burial in his own tomb, Mar 15:43; Mar 15:45.
‘This man went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.’
Concerned that at least Jesus might have a decent burial he approached Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. He had not been able to save Him from ignominy in life. He would do so now that He was dead. It was quite normal for families to ask for the return of the bodies of condemned relatives. But by his act Joseph, who was not a relative, was identifying himself with Jesus. Possibly he wanted Pilate to know that not all the Sanhedrin had agreed with the treatment meted out to Jesus.
