35 And he made a vail of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen: with cherubims made he it of cunning work.   36 And he made thereunto four pillars of shittim wood, and overlaid them with gold: their hooks were of gold; and he cast for them four sockets of silver.   37 And he made an hanging for the tabernacle door of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, of needlework;   38 And the five pillars of it with their hooks: and he overlaid their chapiters and their fillets with gold: but their five sockets were of brass.

In the building of a house there is a great deal of work about the doors and partitions. In the tabernacle these were answerable to the rest of the fabric; there were curtains for doors, and veils for partitions. 1. There was a veil made for a partition between the holy place, and the most holy, Exo 36:35; Exo 36:36. This signified the darkness and distance of that dispensation, compared with the New Testament, which shows us the glory of God more clearly and invites us to draw near to it; and the darkness and distance of our present state, in comparison with heaven, where we shall be ever with the Lord and see him as he is. 2. There was a veil made for the door of the tabernacle, Exo 36:37; Exo 36:38. At this door the people assembled, though forbidden to enter; for, while we are in this present state, we must get as near to God as we can.

Verses 35, 36:

This text describes the fabrication of the veil which separated the “holy place” from the “most holy” or “holy of holies.” The workmen followed the pattern given in Ex 26:31-33. See the comments on this passage.

(35, 36) The order of Exo. xxvi is still followed. From the walls which enclosed the Tabernacle the transition is easy to the vail which divided it into two parts. Exo. 36:35-36 correspond to Exo. 36:31-32 of Exodus 26

The Inner Veil And The Outer Screen ( Exo 36:35-38 ).

Exo 36:35-38

‘And he made the veil of bluey-violet, and purpley-red, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, with cherubim; the work of the expert workman, he made it. And he made for it four pillars of acacia, and overlaid them with gold: their hooks were of gold; and he cast for them four sockets of silver. And he made a screen for the door of the Tent, of bluey-violet, and purpley-red, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, the work of the embroiderer; and the five pillars of it with their hooks: and he overlaid their capitals and their fillets (or ‘connecting-rods’) with gold; and their five sockets were of bronze.’

The making of the veil to separate the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place, and of the screen guarding the entrance to the Sanctuary is now described. See on Exo 26:31-37. The information about the capitals and connecting-rods is new.

veil of blue: Parachoth, from parach, to separate, divide, make a distinction between somewhat, the inner vail, which divided the tabernacle into two, and separated, and made a distinction between the Holy place and the Holy of Holies. This vail was made of the same rich materials as the inner covering of the tabernacle, and curiously embroidered with cherubim and other ornaments. Though it does not appear from Scripture at what distance from either end of the tabernacle this vail was hung, yet is reasonably conjectured, that it divided it in the same proportion in which the temple, built after this model, was divided; that is, two-thirds of the whole length were allotted to the first room, and one-third to the second; so that the room beyond the vail, the Holy of Holies, was exactly square, being ten cubits each way, and the first room, the sanctuary, was twice as long as it was broad.
