And the hanging for the gate of the court [was] needlework, [of] blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen: and twenty cubits [was] the length, and the height in the breadth [was] five cubits, answerable to the hangings of the court.
18, 19. The screen for the gate of the Court. V. 18a=Exo 27:16 a; v. 18b (‘the height,’ &c.) inferred from Exo 27:18 (‘answerable to’ = corresponding to; cf. in RV. Eze 40:18; Eze 45:7; Eze 48:13; Eze 48:18; and see DB. s.v. Answer). V. 19a =Exo 27:16 b; v. 19b their hooks of silver inferred from Exo 27:17 b; the ‘chapiters’ and ‘fillets’ not mentioned in Exo 27:16 (cf. above, on v. 17), only the silver fillets implied in Exo 27:17 a.

The height relates to its standing or hanging upright, and the
breadth relates to the hanging itself, and the height of the hanging was taken in the breadth.

‘And the screen for the entrance of the court was the work of the embroiderer, of bluey-violet, and purpley-red, and scarlet, and fine twined linen: and twenty cubits was the length, and the height in the breadth was five cubits, answerable to the hangings of the court. And their pillars were four, and their sockets four, of bronze; their hooks of silver, and the overlaying of their capitals, and their connecting-rods, of silver.’
“ The height in the breadth.” That is, its height. For details of the entrance screen see on Exo 27:16-18.

Exo 38:18. And the height in the breadth was five cubits The Hebrew is, and its height in the breadth: an expression, which specifies only the height of the hanging.
REFLECTIONS.Behold a figure of the church of God: a little inclosure, with Christ in the midst of it, and his worshippers around him, separated from the world, and ready to remove out of it. Death is coming to fold up the curtains; and then we shall have a more durable abode, translated from the church militant on earth, to the church triumphant in heaven.
