For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man.
8. For the man is not of the woman ] Second argument, drawn from the creation of mankind. The narrative in the book of Genesis establishes two facts, (1) that woman had her being originally through man, and not, as man, directly from God; and (2) that she was created for man’s advantage, and not man for hers. Not that we are to suppose, with some, that woman is in no sense to be regarded as the image and glory of God, but that man is so immediately, she mediately, through man.

Verse 8. For, the man is not of the woman] Bishop Pearce translates , , thus: “For the man doth not BELONG to the woman, but the woman to the man.” And vindicates this sense of , by its use in 1Co 12:15. If the foot shall say, , I am not of the body, i.e. I do not belong to the body. He observes that as the verb is in the present tense, and will not allow that we should understand this verse of something that is past, , for, in the following verse, which is unnoticed by our translators, will have its full propriety and meaning, because it introduces a reason why the woman belongs to the man and not the man to the woman. His meaning is, that the man does not belong to the woman, as if she was the principal; but the woman belongs to the man in that view.

For the man is not of the woman,…. In the present state of things, and according to the ordinary course of generation and propagation of mankind, man is of the woman, though not without the means of man; he is conceived in her, bore by her, and born of her; but the apostle respects the original formation of man, as he was immediately made by God out of the dust of the earth, before the woman was in being, and so not of her:
but the woman of the man; she was made out of his rib, and took both her name and nature from him; God was the author, and man the matter of her being; her original under God, is owing to him; and therefore as he was first in being, he must be superior to her: this serves to prove all that has been as yet said; as that man is the head of the woman, the woman is the glory of man, what he may glory in as being from him; and therefore there should be this difference in their appearance at public worship.

8. For the man is not from the woman. He establishes by two arguments the pre-eminence, which he had assigned to men above women. The first is, that as the woman derives her origin from the man, she is therefore inferior in rank. The second is, that as the woman was created for the sake of the man, she is therefore subject to him, as the work ultimately produced is to its cause. (627) That the man is the beginning of the woman and the end for which she was made, is evident from the law. (Gen 2:18.)

8. For Explaining how woman is man’s glory. Of, or literally, from the man Woman is, according to the Genesis history, derived from man, as the glory is radiated from the luminary.

‘For the man is not of the woman, but the woman of the man, for nor was the man created for the woman, but the woman for the man.’
This idea is then confirmed from what happened at creation. Who came first? The man came first and was first established in authority and as the source of humanity. The woman was then both created for the man as his helpmeet, and was created from the man as his companion. This is only seen as degrading if the man misuses his position or the woman fails to respond correctly. Among God’s people the true position was once more to prevail, the man in loving lordship, the woman in loving response.

1Co 11:8-9 add two more to the chain of for’s extending from 1Co 11:6 : a double reason for asserting that woman is man’s glory appears in the revelation of the origin of mankind made by Scripture (Gen 2:18-25 : the second narrative of Creation, J of the critics), where Eve is represented as framed from a rib taken out of Adam’s body to be his “helpmate”. Woman originates from ( ), and was created for ( because of , ) man, not vice versa . “ differs from as purpose from fact,” (Ed [1637] ). , “For also ” (1Co 11:9 ) the second statement goes to explain the first: Man was there already; and Woman was fashioned out of him for his need. Whether the story of the extracted rib is read as poetry or prosaic fact, the relationship set forth is the same.

And Jehovah God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him…. And Jehovah God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof: and the rib, which Jehovah God had taken from the man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. And the man said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. (Gen 2:18-23). What was in woman was taken out of man. It takes both man and woman to make one reproductive being. Both sets of organs necessary to reproduction were originally in man. God separated them into two beings, counterparts and complements of each other, but the woman was taken out of and from man, and for his good. The twain are one, but one in man. Hence the world over she takes his name.

Another argument which the apostle offers, to prove the inferiority of the woman, is this, That originally the man was not made of the woman, or for the woman, but the woman was made of the man, (his rib,) and for the man, that is, for his service and comfort, to be an help meet for him, and to be in subjection to him.
Man had this prerogative, to be immediately from God; but the woman was from man, and to be administering and subservient to man, and consequently to cover her head in token of her submission to him.

Woman is the glory of man, first, because she came from him in creation. As Adam glorified God by being the product of His creation, so Eve glorified Adam because she came from him. The female sex did not produce the male sex, but the first woman came from the first man. God formed Eve out of a part of Adam whom He created first (Gen 2:21-22).
