Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Leviticus 8:4
And Moses did as the LORD commanded him; and the assembly was gathered together unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
4. the congregation ] A.V. by rendering ‘assembly’ obscures the fact that the Heb. word is the same as in the preceding verse.

And Moses did as the Lord commanded him,…. He convened Aaron and his sons, and the heads of the people, at the door of the tabernacle, and came himself, and brought with him the garments, the oil, and sacrifices, even everything necessary for the consecration:
and the assembly was gathered together unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation; and this was, according to the Targum of Jonathan, on the twenty third day of the month Adar or February; but it rather seems to be later, some time in the beginning of Nisan or March, and before the passover began, see Nu 9:1.

4. And Moses did as the Lord commanded him Although these things relate to the priesthood, the authority and nature of which I expounded under the Second Commandment, yet, inasmuch as they are historical, it is not without reason that I have thought fit to defer them till this place: for, if I had referred to them in connection with the Commandment, unpractised readers would not have easily taken notice of their time. This distinction, however, will be of great assistance to them, that after the doctrine which was properly contained in the Decalogue has been set forth, they will now see how faithfully Moses fulfilled whatever he was commanded, and will be able to compare his obedience with the injunction, as they have done in the whole of the making and dedication of the tabernacle. Besides, there is no question but that the narrative must be thus connected; for it may be readily inferred from many passages, that the priests were anointed on the same day that the tabernacle was consecrated. I will now hastily run through the words. Moses says that he brought near Aaron and his sons, i.e., to set them before God and the people; and then that he “washed them with water,” to make it manifest that they did not bring from their homes the purity which befitted the sanctity of their office, and, inasmuch as they were men, that they could not be clean before God, unless their impurity was washed off. A description of their apparel afterwards follows, which I pass over, lest I should weary my readers by twice repeating the same thing.

(4) And Moses did as the Lord commanded him. That is, he not only summoned Aaron and his sons, but had their holy vestments, the oil, and the sacrifices brought, which were necessary for the consecration.
Unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.Better, to the entrance of the tent of meeting. These representatives of the people, and as many more as the place would conveniently hold, occupied the court-yard, whilst the people at large who wished to witness the solemn consecration of the priesthood probably occupied the neighbouring places which overlooked the enclosure. According to a tradition which obtained in the time of Christ, this ceremony took place on the 23rd of the month Adar, or February.

Lev 8:4-13. And Moses did as the Lord commanded him, &c. Aaron and his sons are consecrated. The people are called to the door of the tabernacle to grace the solemnity, and by their prayers to implore the Divine benediction. Moses, according to God’s directions, proceeds in the consecration: he first washes them. They who are to preach the efficacy of the blood of Christ must first themselves be washed by it, and shew by their own examples the purity they teach. Aaron is clothed with the beautiful garments and diadem, and anointed with the holy oil, as is also the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the sanctuary. Note: 1. Every believer in Jesus has brighter robes provided for him, even garments of everlasting righteousness, and crowns of glory never-fading. 2. The oil ran down from the high-priest’s head to the skirts of his clothing: the gifts and graces of the Holy Ghost, wherewith our great High-Priest was anointed, descend to every member of his body mystical, who have an anointing from the Holy One.

It is always well when the LORD’S servants can produce the LORD’S authority for what they do. Exo 29:4-37 . But, Reader, be very careful to see in all this, the call of JESUS to the priesthood. Heb 5:4 .
