Without the vail of the testimony,…. That is, on the outside of the vail which divided between the holy and holy of holies, and which was before the ark in which the testimony or law was:
in the tabernacle of the congregation; which the apostle calls the first, namely, the holy place in which the candlestick, with its lamps, stood, Heb 9:2;
shall Aaron order it from the evening unto the morning, before the Lord continually, that is, the lamp or lamps, or candlestick, in which they were, or the light of them; his business was, and so every priest’s that succeeded him, to supply the lamps with oil, to dress, him, and snuff them, that they might burn clear, and burn always, and that before the Lord, in the presence of the Lord:
[it shall be] a statute for ever in your generations; until the Messiah should come, the true light, which would put out all such typical ones, and by his Gospel spread light in all his churches throughout the world; [See comments on Ex 27:20] and

(3) Without the vail of the testimony.That is, the second vail, which divided the holy from the most holy. (See Exo. 27:21.)
In the tabernacle of the congregation.Better, in the tent of meeting.
A statute for ever in your generations.Better, a statute for ever throughout your generations, as this phrase is rendered in the Authorised Version in Lev. 23:14; Lev. 23:31, &c. (See Lev. 3:17.)

3, 4. Without the vail The outer sanctuary was one degree less awful in its holiness than the inner. With no opening to admit the light of day, it was illumined only by the golden lamp with its seven lights, one taller than the others, as the Sabbath is more sacred than the other days of the week. The vail typifies the humanity of Christ, at once concealing and manifesting the eternal glory. The candlestick was placed on the south side of the first apartment, opposite the table of show-bread, which it was intended to illumine. The inner apartment, or most holy place, was never illumined save by the outflashing of the shechinah. This beautifully symbolizes the fact, that under the dispensation of the Spirit he certifies his own presence in the believer’s consciousness, needing no other light. 1Jn 2:27.
A statute forever So long as that dispensation continued. When the Holy Ghost descended to light up the temple of the Christian heart, the burning lamp was no longer needed in the Jewish temple.
He shall order the lamps This duty consisted in placing the lamps upon the candlestick in the evening and lighting them, and cleaning and filling them in the morning.

Is not JESUS’S priesthood, as an unchanging, never-ceasing priesthood, here represented? And subordinate to him, are not the services of his ministers also intended to be set forth? While we pray that our great High Priest from the evening even to the morning, continually, will keep our souls alive, that his lamp of grace may never go out; Oh that everyone who acts in that high department, as a minister of the sanctuary, may learn from hence to hold forth the word of life, and daily in the temple, and from house to house, cease not to teach and to preach JESUS CHRIST. JESUS! do thou, who holdest thy ministers as stars in thy right hand while walking amidst the golden candlesticks, do thou be their light, that they may be burning and shining lights to thy people; that the lamp of thy sacred word may, by their ministry and thy blessing, be always shining clear in the midst of thy churches! Before we dismiss these verses, let me just further observe upon them, that the word which in the second verse is translated lamps, is in the original lamp; but in Lev 24:4 the word is plural, lamps. Perhaps the design was this: All the lamps in the temple service represented one and the same, even the HOLY GHOST; and who is, in the Revelation, described by seven spirits which are before the throne. Rev 1:4 . and seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven spirits of GOD. Rev 4:5 . The sacred language hath various ways of expressing this glorious truth, by way of representing the various gifts and operations of the HOLY GHOST; but they all refer to one and the same; for saith an apostle, though there be diversities of operations, yet all these worketh that one and the self-same spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. 1Co 12:11 .
