Of the children of Simeon, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, those that were numbered of them, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

Next listed in the enrollment was Simeon, Jacob’s second son by Leah. Jacob denied him the traditional rights of the firstborn because of his involvement in the slaughter of the Shechemites, Ge 29:33, 34; 49:5.

Those of military age in Simeon numbered 59,300.

Levi was the third of Jacob’s sons by Leah, but he is not listed in this portion of the census. The Levites were charged with the religious duties of Israel, and were exempt from this enrollment.

Simeon was greatly diminished by sin in Num 26:4, and Moses does not mention him in Deut 33.

Those that were numbered of them. Some codices, with two early printed editions, Targum of Onkelos, The Targum of Jonathan ben Uzziel Septuagint, and Syriac, omit this clause. Compare verses: Num 1:20, Num 1:24, Num 1:26, &c.
