Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Numbers 4:8
And they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet, and cover the same with a covering of badgers’ skins, and shall put in the staves thereof.
4-15. This shall be the service ofthe sons of Kohath, c.They are mentioned first, from theirclose connection with Aaron and the special department of dutyassigned to them during the journeyings of Israel accorded with thecharge they had received of the precious contents of the tabernacle. But these were to be previously covered by the common priests, who,as well as the high priest, were admitted on such necessary occasionsinto the holy place. This was an exception to the general rule, whichprohibited the entrance of any but the high priest. But when thecloud removed from the tabernacle, the sanctuary might be entered bythe common priests, as to them was reserved the exclusive privilegeof packing the sacred utensils; and it was not till the holy thingswere thus ready for carriage, that the Kohathites were allowed toapproach.

And they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet,…. Upon the dishes and other vessels belonging to the shewbread table, and on the shewbread itself:
and cover the same with a covering of badgers’ skins; this was clearly the outward covering, and seems to confirm the observation made in Nu 4:6; that the same sort of covering was the outermost covering of the ark:
and shall put in the staves thereof; which belonged to the table, and were made to carry it with on occasion, from place to place; see
Ex 25:27; and the same phrase being used as here of the staves of the ark in Nu 4:6; seems to confirm the sense of them there, that they were taken out and put in upon this occasion, though otherwise fixed.

Reader! observe the repeated precept, as to covering the different vessels in the tabernacle. Then call to mind, what the apostle saith of the darkness of that ministration, and learn to bless GOD for the day light of a better covenant, established upon better promises. Heb 7:22 , etc.

Num 4:8 And they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet, and cover the same with a covering of badgers’ skins, and shall put in the staves thereof.
Ver. 8. And cover the same. ] It is well observed, that only the ark (representing Christ), and the table with show bread, (representing the Church), had three coverings; all the other holy things had but two, for “a covert from storm and from rain.” Thus, “upon all the glory shall be a defence.” Isa 4:5-6
