Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Numbers 27:6

And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,

And the Lord spake unto Moses,…. From off the mercy seat, where he consulted him, and from whence he promised to commune with him about any difficult matter that came before him, Ex 25:22,

saying; as follows.

Verses 6-11:

This text establishes the Mosaic law of succession. The land was to remain in the possession of the family to which it was allocated in the original land grant. If a man died without leaving a male heir, his daughter(s) would inherit his estate. If the daughter married, her husband would represent the father, and in some cases take her name and be counted as one of the father’s family.

If one died childless, the title passed to his next of kin.

This became a statute which determined the legal right of succession in Israel.

Yahweh Acknowledges The Rightness of Their Case. The Daughters Are To Receive Their Inheritance Among Their Brothers ( Num 27:6-7 ).

Num 27:6-7

‘And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, “The daughters of Zelophehad speak right. You shall surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father’s brethren; and you shall cause the inheritance of their father to pass to them.”

Yahweh confirmed to Moses that the land in Gilead and Bashan having been conquered they should be given the portion that would have fallen to their father, or to his male heir, if either had been alive. They would be able to inherit in their father’s name and take with them into their marriages land which would ever be seen as having been their father’s. So would his name be remembered in Israel. He would not have died without just reward for his service for Yahweh. (That is why later it will be stressed that they must marry within the family – Num 36:6).

For us this is a reminder that God is always faithful. No man or woman will ever serve God and then through unfortunate circumstance lose their reward. None will ever be forgotten. So we too must have courage and go forward, and never flinch whatever is demanded of us.

What a gracious interposition of the LORD, in the case of Zelophehad’s daughters; and what a merciful determination! But, Reader! connect with it what was remarked before, of these five sisters being not among the numbered; and then see whether there is not somewhat of a spiritual illustration in it respecting the Gospel church, and that everlasting inheritance purchased by the LORD JESUS, of which the earthly Canaan was a type. Doth it not say, that while all the numbered of Israel shall be inheritors of GOD’S holy mountain, multitudes of the Gentile church, whom, as John saw in his vision, no man could number, shall be brought in and included in that rich salvation? Pray! Reader, consult those scriptures, and compare them together: Isa 49:18-23 ; Rev 7:4-10 .
