Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Judges 6:6
And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.
6. and cried ] Editorial formula; see Jdg 3:9 n. And Israel was greatly impoverished, because of the Midianites,…. Were reduced very low, brought into famishing circumstances through the Midianites thus destroying the fruits of the earth year after year:
and the children of Israel cried unto the Lord; which they should have done at first, instead of going into dens and caves; however, better late than not at all; they cried, not to the idols they had served, being sensible they could not help them, though so as to worship them; but to Jehovah the God of the whole earth, and who was in a special sense their God, though they had forsaken him.
(6) Impoverished. The LXX. render it, was reduced to pauperism. The word implies flaccidity and helplessness, as of a door hanging loose on its hinges, or a sere leaf shaking on a tree.
Cried unto the Lord.See Jdg. 3:9; Jdg. 3:15; Jdg. 4:3; Psa. 107:13; Hos. 5:15.
6. Israel was greatly impoverished Driven from their pastures and robbed of their flocks, (Jdg 6:4,) what else could be the result? The oppression of these children of the East may be inferred from the exacting habits of their modern Bedouin descendants, whose chiefs will extort tribute upon tribute from their own subjects until they become utterly impoverished and ruined.
Here is the first cry of grace which we meet with in the Lord’s heritage under all their sufferings? Seven whole years of misery before that one cry to the Lord for deliverance is heard. No doubt Israel did as you and I have done under our sorrows, that is, tried every resource but the right, and every effort of human policy and human contrivance before application is made to God himself. And never would the heart of either be brought to God, unless that God by his grace in the heart had inclined the sinner to seek him. Doth the Reader know this? Is he most solemnly convinced of it. If not: oh! that the Holy Ghost may be his teacher! 1Jn 4:19 .
