And the LORD said unto the children of Israel, [Did] not [I deliver you] from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines?

11. not from the Egyptians ] The missing verb is supplied by the RV., cf. Exo 14:30; did not I bring you up would be better the verb usually found with from Egypt, Jdg 2:1, Jdg 6:8; then the rest of the verse must be an editorial expansion. But if the restoration of the RV. be kept, the whole verse can be regarded as a conventional summary; no distinct oppression by the Amorites is recorded.

Verse 11. And the Lord said] By what means these reproofs were conveyed to the Israelites, we know not: it must have been by an angel, a prophet, or some holy man inspired for the occasion.

By a prophet he sent unto them, as Kimchi and Abarbinel, see Jud 6:8, whom Ben Gersom takes to be Phinehas, but he could not be living at this time; or by an angel, a created one, sent on this occasion; or the uncreated one, the Son and Word of God, who might appear in an human form, and to whom all that is here said is applicable:

did not I deliver you from the Egyptians; by bringing them out of subjection and bondage to them, and by delivering them out of their hands at the Red sea:

and from the Amorites; the kings of Sihon and Og, whose countries were taken from them, and put into their hands, when they attempted to stop them in their march to the land of Canaan:

from the children of Ammon; when they joined with the Moabites against them, Jud 3:13

and from the Philistines? in the times of Shamgar, Jud 3:31.

11. The Lord said How the Lord spake on this occasion we are not told, and the question can only be a subject of conjecture. Some have thought he spoke by a prophet; others, by some sublime theophany. Keil thinks the answer was given in front of the tabernacle at Shiloh, where the people had assembled to call on the Lord, and came either through the high priest, or by an inward voice which aroused in their consciences the memory of the Lord’s gracious acts and their ingratitude and apostasy.

From the Egyptians By all the miracles of the exodus from that house of bondage, minutely described in the first fourteen chapters of Exodus.

Amorites In the days of Moses. Num 21:21-32.

Ammon Who joined with Moab in the oppression from which Ehud delivered Israel. Jdg 3:13.

Philistines In the days of Shamgar. Jdg 3:31.

Jdg 10:11 a

‘And Yahweh said to the children of Israel.’

An unusual use in the predicate of ‘the children of Israel’ used only when covenant matters were very much in mind. Here they had sought to renew the covenant, but Yahweh’s reply was to be stern. He probably spoke through a prophet.

Jdg 10:11-12

“Did I not deliver you from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines?”

The Hebrew is difficult here but the sense is clear. Yahweh reminded them of all He had done for them in the past. The first from the Egyptians was the great deliverance. But this was followed by deliverance from the Amorites when they fought Sihon and Og (Num 21:21-35), from the children of Ammon (and Moab) in Jdg 3:13, and from the Philistines by the hand of Shamgar (Jdg 3:31).”

These strong, but gracious expostulations, are all leading to repentance. They all convey, what would be justice indeed, but by grace accompanying them, they prepare for mercy. Oh! how precious is that rich, and complete salvation, in which the Lord, in the person of our Great Representative, hath taken vengeance of our sins, while sparing in him the sinner. Hence the assurance of that blessed doctrine. Rom 3:26 .

Jdg 10:11 And the LORD said unto the children of Israel, [Did] not [I deliver you] from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines?

Ver. 11. Did not I deliver you from the Egyptians? ] They instance their sins, and God’s benefits – teaching us to keep catalogues – for an aggravation of their sins. See Deu 32:5-6 Ezr 9:13-14 . There is here an angry aposiopesis; for these words, “I deliver you,” are not in the original. Those that are angry use to utter imperfect speeches.
