And they came unto their brethren to Zorah and Eshtaol: and their brethren said unto them, What [say] ye?

8. What say ye? ] A verb is wanted, such as the EV . supplies; perhaps what did ye find? or see? would be better. Moore ingeniously, on the basis of the LXX, what do ye bring back?

And they came unto their brethren to Zorah and Eshtaol,…. After they had well viewed the city, and made their remarks on the inhabitants of it, the condition and circumstances in which they were, and took notice of the goodness of the land about it, they returned to their brethren that sent them, particularly those that dwelt at the two places mentioned:

and their brethren said unto them, what say ye? what tidings do you bring? what account of the place and country where you have been?

On their return, the spies said to their fellow-citizens, in reply to the question , “ What have you accomplished? ” “ Up, let us go up against them (the inhabitants of Laish), for the land is very good, and ye are silent, ” i.e., standing inactive (1Ki 22:3; 2Ki 7:9). “ Be not slothful to go (to proceed thither), to come and take possession of the land!

Having surveyed Laish and recognised that it was just what they were looking for they reported back to their tribe, who questioned them about what they had discovered.

Encouraged by the report of the spies, 600 men of Dan set off with weapons to attack the city. When they came to mount Ephraim, the spies told them about the house of God with the image and priest. They greeted him in a friendly way and went in to take the image, ephod and household idols. The priest asked them what they were doing and they urged him to keep quiet, asking him if it was not better to serve a tribe in Israel instead of just one man.

The priest happily went with them. They placed the children, household goods and livestock in front of the column, apparently expecting Micah to have a hostile reaction. Micah and the men who worked with him pursued them, but the Danites turned and asked why they followed. Micah responded that they had taken everything from his house of God and left him nothing. They told him he should leave things as they were or be in jeopardy of his life as well as sacrificing the lives of his family. He saw their strength and returned home. Notice, false worship of the true God had not helped him as he thought it would ( Jdg 18:8-26 ; Jdg 17:13 ).

Jdg 18:8-10. The Scouts at Laish.Laish was at the source of the Jordan, being either the modern Tell el Kdi or Banias (p. 32). Zidonians stands here for Phnicians (cf. Jdg 10:12). These were a quiet, industrious trading people, and the men of Laish were after their manner, being, indeed perhaps a Phnician settlement They were the kind of people for whom the Danite scouts were lookinga people easy to conquer! The moral question as to the right of overpowering and disinheriting a quiet and secure peasantry was never raised. At the Bedouin stage of culture, might is right.
