Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of 2 Kings 13:12

And the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did, and his might wherewith he fought against Amaziah king of Judah, [are] they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

12. his might where with he fought against Amaziah king of Judah ] The story of Amaziah’s challenge to Jehoash is told in 2Ki 14:8-14 and in 2 Chronicles 25. He was proud of his victory over Edom, and sent to the king of Israel saying, ‘Come let us see one another in the face’, and, in spite of the wise message of Jehoash, would come forth to battle and was defeated at Beth-shemesh. After his victory the king of Israel broke down a part of the wall of Jerusalem, and carried away the treasures and vessels both from the house of the Lord and from the king’s house.

Verse 12. Wherewith he fought against Amaziah] This war with Amaziah may be seen in ample detail 2 Chron. 25; it ended in the total defeat of Amaziah, who was taken prisoner by Joash, and afterwards slain in a conspiracy at Lachish. Joash took Jerusalem, broke down four hundred cubits of the wall, and took all the royal treasures, and the treasures of the house of God. See 2Ch 25:20-27.
