And David [was] then in the hold, and the Philistines’ garrison [was] then at Bethlehem.

16. in the hold ] Cp. note on the cave of Adullam (1Ch 11:15).

the Philistines’ garrison ] R.V. the garrison of the Philistines. The word may however mean “the Philistine governor” (so read in 1Sa 13:3-4 for the same Heb. word). The parallel passage however (2Sa 23:14) has “the garrison of the Philistines.”

The Philistines garrison.An outpost; for their army was camping near Jerusalem.
