And they carried the ark of God in a new cart out of the house of Abinadab: and Uzza and Ahio drove the cart.
7. a new cart ] A new cart was chosen as one which had not been profaned by common work. So (Jdg 16:11-12) new ropes “wherewith no work hath been done” were used in the attempt to bind the consecrated man, Samson. So also (Mar 11:2; Mar 11:7) our Lord rode into Jerusalem on a colt “whereon no man ever yet sat.”
the house of Abinadab ] Here the ark had been for at least twenty years under the charge of a man sanctified to keep it (1Sa 7:1-2)

Verse 7. In a new cart] Lest it should be profaned by being placed on any carriage that had been employed about common uses.
Uzza and Ahio] All the versions understand achyo as signifying brother or brothers; so does Jarchi, who observes, from 2Sa 6:3, that these were the sons of Abinadab.

Is it not astonishing in the very first view of things, that David, and all his wise men, should have so far forgotten the Lord’s commands concerning the ark, as to attempt the removing it this way. Was it because the Philistines had made use of a cart to put the ark upon, that Israel should do the same, when the Lord had specially commanded the sons of Kohath to bear upon their shoulders the holy things! Num 7:9 .

carried the ark: Heb. made the ark to ride, at Num 3:10, and again at verse 38. A particular caution is given that strangers must not touch, or even pry into, the most holy things connected with the tabernacle, lest the offender die. In giving the law, also, even a beast which touched Sinai’s mount was, by the Almighty’s fiat, to be stoned or thrust through with a dart. And again we read – Num 4:15 after special orders to Aaron and his sons about covering the sanctuary and all the vessels previously to a removal, that the Kohathites, who were to carry them, “shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die.” These were positive commands. May the sin of Uzza in touching the ark, warn Christians to take heed of rashness and irreverence in dealing about holy things. See note on 1Ch 13:9.
