Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of 1 Chronicles 6:61

And unto the sons of Kohath, [which were] left of the family of that tribe, [were cities given] out of the half tribe, [namely, out of] the half [tribe] of Manasseh, by lot, ten cities.

Which were left, over and above the priests who were of the same family of Kohath and tribe of Levi.

By lot, ten cities, or, by lot (with a full point, for there the sense ends).

All their cities were ten cities, as it is expressly said, Jos 21:6. These words, all their cities were, are to be understood out of the former verse; which is not unusual in the Holy Scripture. And so this sacred writer explains himself, 1Ch 6:66, &c., where eight of these cities are named, whereof only two are taken out of this half tribe of Manasseh, 1Ch 6:70, the other two being named, Jos 21:21, &c., where these things are more plainly and fully declared.

by lot, ten cities(Jos 21:26). The sacredhistorian gives an explanation (1Ch6:66). Eight of these are mentioned, but only two of them aretaken out of the half tribe of Manasseh (1Ch6:70). The names of the other two are given (Jos21:21), where full and detailed notices of these arrangements maybe found.

(61) And unto the sons of Kohath, which were left of the family of that tribe.A comparison with Jos. 21:5 shows that the text is again mutilated. That passage reads (Heb.), And unto the sons of Kohath which were left, out of the families [clans] of the tribe of Ephraim, and out of the tribe of Dan, and out of the half of the tribe of Manasseh, by the lot, ten cities. The curious redundancy of the present text of 1Ch. 6:61, Out of the half of the tribe of the half of Manasseha phrase which occurs nowhere elsesuggests bad emendation of a corrupt reading. The passage from Joshua undoubtedly gives the meaning here. (Comp. 1Ch. 6:66-67, below.)

(61-63) These verses correspond to Jos. 21:5-7. They supply short statements of the number of cities in the various tribes assigned to the non-Aaronic Kohathites, to the Gershonites, and the Merarites.

1Ch 6:61-65

1Ch 6:61-65

“And unto the rest of the sons of Kohath were given by lot, out of the family of the tribe, out of the half-tribe, the half of Manasseh, ten cities. And the sons of Gershom, according to their families, out of the tribe of Issachar, and out of the tribe of Ashur, and out of the tribe of Naphtali, and out of the tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteen cities. Unto the sons of Merari were given by lot according to their families, out of the tribe of Reuben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities. And the children of Israel gave to the Levites the cities with their suburbs. And they gave by lot out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon, and out of the tribe of the children of Benjamin, these cities which are mentioned by name.”

E.M. Zerr:

1Ch 6:57-81. It will be just as well to comment on this group of verses as a whole. On the west side of the Jordan River there were cities selected from the various families of the tribe of Levi, three of which were cities of refuge. They were Hebron (1Ch 6:57), Gezer (1Ch 6:67) and Golan (1Ch 6:71). These several cities were scattered throughout the land in general, hence were taken from the different tribes. This long paragraph is a list of the various cities given to the Levites, showing from whose possessions they had been appropriated.
