(70) Aner . . . Bileam.Jos. 21:25 reads, Taa-nach [see Jos. 17:11] and Gath-rimmon. The latter is a mere repetition from the preceding verse. Bileam is a mans name, being the Hebrew spelling of Balaam. It should be Ibleam (Jos. 17:11). So the LXX. Aner (Gen. 14:13) is also a man, one of Abrahams allies. Taanach is probably right, the last three letters of the Hebrew word closely resembling those of Aner.
For the family.Better, unto the family of the sons of Kohath who were left. This depends on the idea of giving (1Ch. 6:67). The phrase is a sort of subscription to the whole list of 1Ch. 6:67-70. For family the plural should be read, as in Jos. 21:26.

Aner: Aner is probably another name of Tanach, which was a city of the half tribe of Manasseh, west of Jordan; and Eusebius, Jerome, and Procopius of Gaza, say that it was in their time a considerable place, three miles from Legio. Jos 21:25, Tanach, Gath-rimmon
Bileam: i.e. devouring; foreigner, [Strong’s H1109]. Compare the same Hebrew word rendered Balaam. Num 22:5, Ibleam is here called Bileam, by a transposition of letters common to all languages. It is evident, however, that many of these cities or their names have been changed since the time of Joshua; but, as it has been well observed, Salop and Shrewsbury, Sarum and Salisbury, are as different names as any in these catalogues; yet those who live in their vicinity are not at all confused by them. Some cities also are here mentioned as belonging to Ephraim, which in Joshua are spoken of as cities of Dan; but various changes in such matters would occur in a course of ages.
