Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of 1 Chronicles 9:20

And Phinehas the son of Eleazar was the ruler over them in time past, [and] the LORD [was] with him.

Verse 20. And Phinehas] The Targum says, “And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, was ruler over them from ancient times, from the day in which the tabernacle was set up in the wilderness; and the WORD of the Lord was his assistant.”

Over them, i.e. over all the porters, and other Levites and priests before mentioned.

The Lord was with him, to direct, and assist, and bless him in the discharge of his place; which seems here related to encourage his successor, and consequently all the priests and Levites of this time, to go on courageously and resolutely in their work, not doubting but God will stand by them as he had done by their fathers.

And Phinehas the son of Eleazar was the ruler over them in time past,…. Over the host, over the Levites, and the chief of them; which is to be understood of Phinehas the son of Eleazar, in the time of Moses, who succeeded his father in that post, see Nu 3:32 though some think, as Kimchi observes, that this was not Phinehas the priest, but a certain Levite of this name in this post; but since he is said to be in time past, it may very well be understood of him: and it also is observed,

and the Lord was with him; inspiring him with zeal for his honour and glory, assisting and strengthening him to do his will and work, as particularly in the affair of Zimri, Nu 25:7, the Targum is,

“the Word of the Lord was for his help;”

this may be said for the encouragement of him that was in the same office now.

(20) And Phinehas the son of Eleazar was the ruler over them in time past.Or, of yore. Phinehas may have held this office of president (nagd, 1Ch. 9:11) of the warders before he became high priest, just as Eleazar had held a similar position during the lifetime of Aaron (Num. 3:32). Nothing is said of it elsewhere.

And the Lord was with him.Rather, The Lord be with him! a pious ejaculation, such as the Jews of later times were wont to use in speaking of a departed worthy; and of interest to us as indicating a belief in continued existence after death. (Comp. 1Ch. 22:11; 1Ch. 22:16.)
