And when ye came unto this place,…. The borders of Moab, the wilderness before it, to which joined the plains they were now in; see
Nu 21:13;
Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, came out against us unto battle; not together, but one after the other, and that very quickly; as soon almost as they had fought with the one, and conquered him, the other came out against them:
and we smote them; killed them and their armies, and the inhabitants of their countries; the history of which see in Nu 21:23.

7. And when ye came unto this place. This, a third instance (of God’s goodness), because He had smitten the first enemies, who encountered them to impede their passage, and thus had already begun to bring them into a place of rest. For inasmuch as the two tribes and a half had here chosen their home, they might behold as in a mirror that the possession of the promised land awaited them. Hence, then, Moses concludes that they were under obligation to keep the law, and exhorts them to shew their gratitude by faithful and sincere obedience. The object, therefore, of the recital is, to procure reverent attention to his doctrine; since the word שכל , (261) shakal, in Hiphil, means to act successfully as well as prudently. I have set down both readings, since they are alike suitable to the sense. For we have seen in chapter 4, that this was the people’s only wisdom to obey God’s statutes; nor was their prosperity to be expected from any other source except God’s blessing, which is everywhere promised to the Israelites, if they keep the law.
(261) תשכילו; A. V., that ye may prosper. S.M., ut prudenter agatis; but he adds, the Hebrews, explain this word by הצליחו, “that ye may prosper.” The Hiphil of שכל, says Simon’s Lexicon, is to act prudently, and by a metonymy of the antecedent for the consequent, to proceed prosperously. — W.

Ver. 7, 8. And when ye came unto this place They were now in a part of the country which they had conquered, ch. Deu 4:45-46. The sense appears to be this: “As, therefore, God has thus far performed his covenant with you, given you victory over your enemies, and their land for an inheritance to your tribes; do you take care to perform your part in return, and to keep the words of his covenantthat ye may prosper.”
REFLECTIONS.The former covenant was made at Sinai. This is a repetition of it: as they were a new generation, it was needful that they should themselves consent to the gracious terms proposed to them. 1. To induce them thereunto, Moses puts them in mind of God’s astonishing interposition to save them from Egypt, his care of them in the wilderness, and the possessions they began to enjoy in Bashan and Heshbon. Past mercies are an engagement to fidelity, and encouragement still to expect greater. 2. He laments their past blindness, unbelief, and murmurings; repeatedly had they given sad proof of these, and to that day they remained in them. Note; (1.) Unbelief is a deep-rooted evil. (2.) ‘Till God opens the eyes of our mind, we can neither know him, love him, nor serve him. 3. He charges them to attend now to the words of this covenant: and happy, if, at last, there were such a heart in them, firmly to believe the divine promises, and cheerfully to obey the divine commands; prosperity then could not but attend them.

Israel is reminded of what hath been already done on this side Jordan, by way of confirming the faith of the people, in what the LORD will do on the other side. Reader! depend upon it, the earnest of the SPIRIT in the heart, is a sure pledge of salvation. If my GOD accepts me in JESUS now; he will not condemn me then, when, rising from the bed of death, I shall stand before his throne. 2Co 5:1 ; Rom 8:1 .
